10 Vital Questions Which You Have To Ask When Purchasing Health Insurance

If you are considering purchasing health insurance the specific details of your plan are critical and there a number of questions which you need to ask. Just looking at the premium that you are being asked to pay is insufficient and you must look at a number of different things including any limitations, exclusions, restrictions on where treatment can be done, additional fees and payment requirements and a number of other things.

Below are a few important questions that you should always ask when you are purchasing a health insurance plan:

1. What deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses will I have to pay? Your premiums are just a starting point and the majority of plans will require you to cover your bills up to a specified amount before your plan kicks in. Thereafter, you will normally also be required to make a payment towards the cost of each medical bill.

2. Are medical exams and health screenings covered under the plan? Examine the plan to ascertain whether or not your plan covers you for routine medical exams including things like breast exams, mammograms and pap smears for women.

3. How are specialist care treatments and referrals dealt with? Examine the procedures you need to follow if you need to be referred for specialist treatment and whether or not there are any special provisions for meeting the cost of special care treatment.

4. What level of cover is given for emergency care and hospital treatment? {Take a good look to see whether or not you will have to have prior approval for hospital or emergency treatment. It may seem crazy but some policies will not allow you to ask for emergency treatment without the prior approval of a specified physician.

5. What cover is given for prescription medication? A lot of plans will limit the drugs which can be prescribed often stating that a list of generic drugs rather than brand name drugs have to be prescribed. You also need to look carefully at the proportion of any cost you will be required to meet for medication.

6. Is cover for vision and dental care provided? Many plans do not cover vision and dental care at all while some limit treatment to merely routine annual eye and dental checkups.

7. Is psychiatry, psychotherapy and other mental health care provided? Not all insurance plans will cover these areas and where cover is given you must look carefully at exactly what level of cover is being offered.

8. Is hospital, home and nursing home care covered? It is important to examine the extent to which cover is given for care in a nursing home, hospital or at home and whether or not there is a ceiling on your cover.

9. Is rehabilitation and physical therapy covered? Illness or accident frequently results in a need for physical therapy or rehabilitation and so it is important to see the extent to which these are covered.

10. Is alternative therapy covered? As a growing number of people are choosing alternative treatments like the use of holistic treatments or acupuncture you need to check to see whether these are covered if this is something which you wish to make use of.

The premium you will need to pay for any health insurance plan is certainly important but it is merely one small element of the overall package you are purchasing.
