100% Whey Protein - What is it?

100% whey protein is a protein supplement that is made from the sweet whey from fresh milk. As the protein is extracted from the milk it is suspended in liquid form. At this point the whey protein liquid is dehydrated using a low heat process which reduces the liquid suspended whey protein into a powder. Manufacturers next take the protein powder and add other ingredients to create protein shake mixes, or they take the powder and add it to other health food products like protein bars and baked goods.

The labeling on containers can be a little confusing, as no protein powder mix is really 100% whey protein. In actuality the product contains whey protein in addition to natural flavors, vitamins, additives, and sweeteners. To determine how much whey protein is actually in a product you will need to divide the grams of protein per serving by the serving size and then multiply that number by 100. This will give you the percentage of the product, by weight, which is whey protein.

Whey protein is an amazing product that offers a lot of important nutrients and compounds. 100% whey protein is made up of eight different protein compounds that aid in many different body functions. First it contains Beta-Lactoglobumin, which is an excellent source of BCAAs. Next it contains Alpha-Lactoglobumin, which is helps your body to absorb calcium. Glycomacropeptide is another protein compound found in whey protein. This compound stimulates the pancreases and encourages it to release enzymes that are important for the digestion of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. It also contains Immunoglobin and Lysozyme which are both important for the support of your immune system. Bovine Serum Albumin is another protein compound that whey protein contains. This element contains all nine of the essential amino acids that you body needs to function properly. Finally it contains Lactoferrin and Lactoperoxidase which both help your body to absorb iron into your bloodstream.

When you are shopping for 100% whey protein powder you may notice that some whey products claim to contain hydrolyzed or pre-digested whey protein. This simply means that the protein that these products use has been treated with a series of enzymes which work to break down the protein particles into smaller pieces to make them easier to digest. The drawback of using a product that contains pre-digested protein is that it will have a bitter or bad taste. Products are required to print on their label how much of their volume is made up of pre-digested protein.

Whey protein powder can be used for many purposes. First it can be used as a dietary supplement in the form of a shake. Secondly it can be mixed into smoothies to add nutritional value. Finally it can also be added to muffins, yogurt, juices, cereal, and baked goods. By adding the powder to foods you will not only be adding flavor and texture to your foods, but you will also be adding fiber, protein, amino acids, and other important nutrients.
