There are many types of skin problems that affect people around the world but the most common is acne and while it may seem to be a teenage condition, it would be a mistake to believe that adults cannot suffer with it as well. Although it is most common in teenagers it can still affect anyone and with almost nine out of every ten people having to deal with it at some point it is probably the prevalent condition on the planet.

Acne is the result of clogged hair follicles, caused by the overproduction of sebum, which is from the sebaceous glands but oil alone doesn't clog pores nor does oily skin necessarily equal acne. Acne is the result of the sebum in the pores and not the skin itself although the condition does seem to be a modern problem and not something we have always had to live with.

Fortunately acne can be treated and one off the many causes of this condition is the hormone adjustments made when a person is growing up although it can also be as a result of makeup that has not been removed fully or pollution. Many other factors contribute to the formation of acne and some debate that diet impacts the formation of acne, caused by reprocessed foods, junk foods, and sugars this contemporary society eats every day.

For a recurring or severe case of acne, many sufferers turn to a dermatologist for a more aggressive treatment and in most cases, a prescribed routine and medication can help to treat acne. Usually, follow-up visits will be necessary to that the acne is being cured without further intervention being required. The fingernails are the acne sufferer's biggest problem as bacteria can cause further infection of the already sensitive area so it is important that the acne is not aggravated any further.

The problem comes about because most people do not realize that bacteria and germs cannot normally be seen by the naked eye and they believe if their nails look clean they are safe. So wherever possible, it is advisable to keep the hands, especially fingernails away from any acne spots.

Unfortunately, acne does seem to have a hereditary link so if you mother and father had acne ten you will also probably suffer as well, bearing in mind that the number of individuals with perfect skin in the world is very low. In the vast majority of acne cases though, it is caused by the transition from a child to an adult and the changes that take place during this period.

When the condition is affecting the individual both physically and emotionally then this is a good time to take advice from a dermatologist. This article is based on information readily available but should be used as a guide only, so if you are unsure, contact a medical professional about your condition.
