If the 304 is followed by an L this indicates that it is a low carbon version which is used extensively in heavy gauge components because it requires no weld annealing. 304 stainless has alloys chromium and nickel. This is a grade that is used both in commercial and residential applications and it is one of the most common stainless grades. It is often found in the food and beverage industries, chemical processing, pulp and paper, transportation. It is recognized for its hygienic qualities and for its resistance to corrosion. It's great in many different atmospheric environments and although it is definitely corrosion resistant recognize that it may need a little assistance every now and then with a proper sealant. It also has a reputation for its heat resistance. Its oxidation resistance in continuous service to 925 degrees Celsius. Although capable of running temperatures ranging from 425 to 860 degrees Fahrenheit it is not recommended that you do it continuously. 304L is a little more heat resistant. This metal is excellent for welding by all fusion methods traditionally used with or without any filler metal. If it's a heavy weld you might need post weld annealing.
