4 Easy Steps On How To Relight Your Water Heater Pilot Light
|
1. We will first want to get that gas-control knob to the off position. Then, immediately follow this step by turning that thermostat to the lowest possible setting. Usually, this is one in a clockwise manner. You will need to wait for about 5-minutes to let that smell of gas dissipate. However, if 5 minutes passes and you still smell gas, you need to immediately call your gas company and leave the area. 2. Assuming the gas smell dissipated, you can now continue to the next step. You will need to remove and/or open the inner and outer cover panels surrounding the burner chamber using either a set of pliers or a wrench. At this point, you should get a visual on your pilot light tube. You must relight your water heater pilot light with this. This tube runs from the front of the tank at the gas control knob and runs underneath to the burner chamber. You should have some long, wooden matches handy, and be able to comfortably get a visual on that pilot-light tube. 3. Now, turn the gas control valve to the position that says pilot. Immediately, light a long, wooden match, and hold that match near the end of the pilot light tube. You will want to depress and firmly hold that reset button on the gas control knob. As soon as you see the water heater pilot light lightup, you should remove the match, but continue holding that reset button for about one minute. 4. If your water heater pilot light stays lit, just resecure the paneling. If you cannot get the water heater pilot light to stay lit, you can try again. However, if it refuses to light, you may need to change the water heater thermocouple. Sometimes, the unexpected happen. If that reset button does not popup immediately, you need to call the gas company immediately and vacate the area. Since there is a lot of sharp metal around that pilot light, I suggest wearing a pair of glove to protect your digits. You do want to have hot water, but it is more important to have fingers to get that hot water into your tub. Finally, always remember to keep your face as far away from the burner chamber as humanly possible. You can cause bursts of flames that can be dangerous. The easiest way to avoid this is to just keep the face away. I had a friend who sent a fireball down my hall. He was also missing his eyebrows and mustache for a while. While this was hilarious, it could have been much worse. About The Author: Alphonso has been working in the home remodeling industry for last 5 years.
