5 Steps On How To Check Water Heater Elements
|
1. The first thing you will need is a basic understanding of how a OHM/voltage meter works. Then you must have a basic understanding what a heating element in the water heater looks like. Usually, you can get to the heating elements via an access panel. I find that many heating elements will look similar to stove burners. 2. Next, you need to disconnect the power. You do NOT have to drain the tank to check to see if the heating elements are functioning properly. You DO need to drain the tank to replace the heating elements though. Now, you should expose the elements by removing the panel. The you will disconnect the wires - usually two - that connect to the elements. 3. Now, set the OHM feature on the meter. You need to check the flow precisely in between the two connector screws of the elements. 4. Now to read the outcome. Are you getting a positive meter reading? This means you have a closed circuit and those elements are fine. Are you getting no reading? Well, this open circuit means that you need to replace those heating elements. If you get a positive meter reading when you check the flow between either connector and the element, the heating element is not working properly and needs replaced. Here is what you should expect from elements that work properly- 3500 watts should be 15.5 ohms- 4500 watts should be 13.0 ohms- 5500 watts should be 10.0 ohms 5. If you have decided you need to replace the heating element, you can proceed to the net tutorial for that insightful information. Or, you can now close up the panel after you have reconnected the wires removed in step 2. I must insist that if you feel uncomfortable with an OHM meter, or if you are just having difficulties, that you call a professional to help you check the elements. You can usually find a reliable plumber in the yellow pages. Learning how to check water heater element is not a difficult task. Being able to check this yourself can save you money, and if you feel confident in your abilities, you can attempt to change the elements yourself. Besides, it never hurts to empty the tank and do a thorough cleaning while you are at it. Hopefully, this will make your heating element experience a positive one.
