5 Steps To Replacing That Water Heater Thermocouple

If you have a gas water heater, chances are pretty good that you have experienced a non-working water heater thermocouple. Are you scratching your head at this point? Well, a water heater thermocouple is out if your gas pilot light refuses to stay lit. While this is a common occurrence, you may feel relieved to know this is an easy problem to fix and is very inexpensive. I am not actually mechanically inclined, yet I have changed my water heater thermocouple in a very short time.

1. First, you should not work on a gas water heater with the gas still running. You can find a gas valve on the water heater, and a gas valve on the gas line beside the water heater. You need to turn these all the way off. This guarantees safety, and allows you to continue with the process without fear that you could blow something up - mainly you.

2. Next, you need to carefully remove the copper looking tubing which is called the water heater thermocouple, then you need to disconnect the gas tube leading to the pilot light, and finally you will disconnect the gas tube that runs to the main burner. These should all be unattached at the upper, outside section of the water heater.

3. Now, you should be able to gentle pull out the burner assembly. From here, you will want to completely remove that copper tubing also known as the water heater thermocouple.

4. Head to your nearest hardware store, or lumber store. You should take that water heater thermocouple with you so you can get an exact replacement. While you can make a guesstimation, you will save a lot of time taking the water heater thermocouple with you and letting someone else decide the proper size for your need. The good news is that you should spend no more than $10 USD for your new water heater thermocouple .

5. Head back home, but do this one thing before reconnecting. Get a vacuum cleaner and give that area a good cleaning. You already have it open, and it is better to kill two birds with one stone.

6. Now, attach the water heater thermocouple to its proper place on the burner assembly. Reinsert the burner assembly. Add proper fittings to their proper location.

7. Before you close this up, I suggest you apply some soapy water to all of the joints you can get to and check for bubbles. If you get bubbles, you have a gas leak, and should take necessary steps to fix this problem.

When you need to replace your water heater thermocouple, you may be surprised at how easy and inexpensive the endeavor actually is. You can do this is only a couple of hours. The longest wait is getting to and from the store. Of course, these water heater thermocouples are toy, yet they offer so much more.

Purchasing and installing a water heater thermocouple is easy if you have a basic understanding of what each part is, and what it does.
