5 Steps to Trampoline Safety

Trampolines are probably one of the most common yard accessories for families with children in America. A trampoline is a lot of fun, it is educational, and it is healthy. However, a trampoline can cause serious injury if you are not prepared for the worse. Do you know how to keep your children safe? Do you know which trampolines have the best track record in accident prevention? Do you properly maintain your trampoline? Do you know the easiest way to insure trampoline safety for your family?

Below is a list of solutions for keeping you and your loved ones safe. Of course, this is not a list that covers every aspect of trampoline safety, but you will find that most of the safety precautions are simply good, old fashioned common sense.

1. Wear and tear - You should always be sure to regularly inspect your trampoline for signs of wear and tear. Start at the springs - the springs should not be worn, bent, or stretched to the max. You will also want to check where the springs attach to the trampoline mat - this can be a place to check for wear and tear in the signs of torn matting. Next, investigate the frame itself for signs of rust and aging. Believe it or not, many of the higher quality trampolines will offer you replacement parts; the lower quality trampolines will not offer such an advantage.

2. Safety getting on and off - If you have small children, make sure that they get assistance from a parent, an adult, or an older sibling getting on and off the trampoline. The trampoline is quite a ways up, and for small children, injury can occur as they mount and dismount the trampoline.

3. What to wear - There is perhaps nothing as important as to what to wear when you are on a trampoline. For trampoline safety, make sure that the person or persons on a trampoline never has any type of jewelry on their person. This includes necklaces, earrings, and rings. Jewelry can get snagged in the springs or the matting. No shoes should be worn on the trampoline, and socks should be clean. Keeping your trampoline in good working order is going to make your trampoline last. Make sure clothes are appropriate as well.

4. How many is too many - You should only have one person on a trampoline at any given time. However, I know from experience that keeping one at a time on the trampoline is not always easy. The larger trampolines can support more than one person, but I never suggest more than two people at any given time. Make sure there is no fighting over the trampoline, because children can injury one another while jumping together.

5. What is the weather like - You should only utilize a trampoline on days when the weather is nice. I suggest a trampoline cover for days you are not using the trampoline and to protect the trampoline from the environmental elements.
