5 Things To Know When Selecting Umbrella Stands

You may be wondering just how much you need to know to buy something as simple as an umbrella stand. Well, unless you want to spend your next deck party chasing your umbrella across the yard, there are a few things to consider before purchasing umbrella stands.

First, you need to measure the width of the canopy of the umbrella while it is extended. This will help in deciding how much weight the base needs. In order to keep both the stand and umbrella firmly in place in a strong breeze, the base must be the proper weight for the size of the umbrella. Naturally, larger umbrellas would take heavier umbrella stands to keep it in place.

Then, measure the pole of the umbrella. If the umbrella has an oversized pole, you may need a base designed specifically for those types of umbrella. Most umbrellas are a standard size, under two inches, that will fit most stands, but you wouldn't want to have to worry about unnecessary returns. If you do find that your umbrella's pole measures 2 inches or more, there are oversized pole stands available to accommodate you.

Next, is your umbrella freestanding or does it fit through a table? A stand for an umbrella that fits through a table can be considerably lighter than the stand needed for an umbrella that has no other support. Also, when selecting a base for a table model, you want to consider foot room under the table. If the base is too wide, it can make sitting at the table uncomfortable. If the base is too narrow and the umbrella is freestanding, it can tip over more easily. The type of umbrella you are shopping for a stand for plays a big part in the stand you select.

Now, we have the decision of what material you would like. Consider whether you need the base to match your outdoor furniture. Many different metals are available, such as cast iron and brass. You can find stands made of natural materials, such as granite or stone. There are even plastic models, which you fill with sand or water to get the correct amount of weight. No matter what your desire, you can find a good quality stand made of a durable material to last a lifetime.

Finally, consider the design of the base. Would you want something more decorative or just something plain? There are bases available that have are on wheels, so you can move it to whatever position you need that particular day. There are round stands, octagonal stands, even square stands. There are bases with intricate patterns and designs. There are, of course, plain standard looking bases. Whatever goes the best with your patio or purpose, you can find the perfect design for you.

So now you see that there's a little more to selecting an umbrella stand than just running out and grabbing one. So get out your measuring tape, step back, take a look at your space and get to shopping. As long as you know what you're looking for, finding effective umbrella stands is a breeze.
