5 Things To Look For When Buying A Beach Umbrella

There is nothing more fun and relaxing than a day on the beach. However, hours and hours of direct sun can wreak havoc on your body. A good beach umbrella can prevent many of the problems we face in the outdoors and make your day at the beach even more enjoyable. Here's a quick guide to help you in your search for the perfect umbrella.

Style - What pattern you choose for your umbrella is strictly a matter of personal taste. There are solids, stripes, prints, and floral designs. You can find umbrellas in any color imaginable and even all colors at once. There are even umbrellas designed to look like various flowers. Let your umbrella show off your individual personality.

Size - The size umbrella you need for the beach mainly depends on how many people will be using it and what you're using it for. Is it just for short breaks between swim sessions? Will small children be napping under it? Beach umbrellas range from just a couple feet across, to attach to a chair, up to 8 or more feet across, for use by an entire family. Choose the smallest size model for your needs. A larger umbrella will be more cumbersome to carry on and off the sand, however buying on that is too small can leave someone out and in danger of a nasty sunburn.

SPF number - Everyone knows how dangerous the sun's UV rays can be. That's why checking the SPF or sun protection factor of the umbrellas you're interested in is very important. By purchasing a umbrella with an SPF of 35 or higher can add additional sun protection. This doesn't mean however that you're completely protected from the sun, while an SPF treated umbrella can help, a good sunscreen is still needed whenever you're being exposed to sunlight.

Materials - Beach umbrellas come in two main fabric types, either canvas or nylon. Canvas tends to be a bit more durable, however it's a bit heavier to carry and takes longer to dry when it gets wet. Nylon umbrellas are lightweight and fade less often, plus have a faster drying time. Also consider whether you want a wooden or metal pole for your umbrella. Wood tends to wear a little faster than metal, and metal poles sometimes come apart for ease in portability.

Anchors - Making sure the umbrella is securely planted in the sand is important to your safety, plus the safety of other beach goers around you. Check to see if an anchor is provided with the umbrella you plan to purchase. If there is not one, there are different types available to help secure your umbrella, so that you aren't chasing it all over the beach and risking injuring someone. There are weight bags available to help stabilize an umbrella. Another popular device screws into the sand and the umbrella pole is then inserted into the device. Look around and see what you think will be the easiest and most effective for you to use.

There are many factors to consider when purchasing beach umbrellas. Hopefully some of the information here will be helpful to you in your quest for the perfect beach umbrella. From the fun things like style, to the more mundane, like what kind of anchor to use, the end choice is yours.
