6 Elements To Consider With A Patio Umbrella

Your outdoor space might not provide enough natural shade spots especially in urban areas where trees may be at a premium. A smart way to compensate is to buy a patio umbrella. Here are 6 elements that you need to consider.

You might think there isn't that much involved in buying an umbrella for your patio but actually that's not true. If you don't have your patio details you are going to have a tough time choosing an umbrella that's going to look great and fit right.

Remember to also consider your lifestyle and what it is you expect from your umbrella. What is it you want to accomplish? Provide shade for eating or relaxing? Looking to also provide protection from the rain? Using it over a table?

Let's start looking at the elements that are important:

1. SizeYou need to determine what size of umbrella you will need. Measure your table and chairs space if that's where you'll be using it. If you are going to using it over other patio furniture then measure it up.

The most common use of a patio umbrella is in the center of a patio table but it certainly isn't the only way to use one.

What you need to remember is that your umbrella needs to be 4 feet larger than the area you want to cover.

2. PositionYou need to know where you want to put the umbrella to provide shade before you can choose the right one. As mentioned earlier a common location is through the center of a table and the other method is stand alone.

The larger stand alone umbrellas are perfect for a larger backyard because you can use it to shade different areas and different furniture.

3. StandThere are different types of stands on the market. The type you pick will depend on how you are going to use your umbrella. If your umbrella is stand alone it will require a much heavier base to keep it in place. When used with the table the table provides some of the support combined with a smaller sand base.

4. MaterialThere are all kinds of materials on the market but one of the main purposes on your mind is to protect you and your guests from the UV rays of the sun so make sure the material you choose does that.

PVC usually blocks 100% UV and it also works to block the rain. Canvas is durable and blocks the UV rays nicely. It can block the rain if you spay it with a waterproofing spray. Basic cloth blocks up to 95% of the UV rays and can block a light shower but nothing heavier.

5. FrameUmbrellas are made with either a wood or a metal frame. Which you choose will depend on how you are going to use your umbrella and which would look best with your dcor.

A metal frame allows you to angle the umbrella in a almost any direction by using a button to tilt and a crank system. A wood frame is usually made from teak and uses a pulley to open and rotate but it cannot be angled.

6. TiltThere are three different tilt systems on the market which include the push button, crank tilt, and collar tilt which is the easiest to use.

Your patio umbrella should be an important part of your patio dcor so make sure you choose the perfect one!
