8 Features Of An Office Chair

It wasn't long ago that we thought a chair was just a chair. With the realization of how important the design of a chair was came choices. The features for an office chair provide options to provide the best ergonomic chair possible. Here are 8 of the most important features to consider.

1. Adjustable seat heightThe chair must allow for the up and down adjustment of the seat height so that the correct ergonomic position can be achieved by the user. When the seat is correctly adjusted, the thighs will be parallel with the with the floor and the heels will sit flat on the floor.

2. A deep seatPurchase a chair that has good seat depth so that the thighs and upper legs are correctly supported. A correctly fitted seat will allow your back to rest against the back rest, while the seat supports the thigh. It should not apply pressure to the back of the knees.

3. Lumbar back supportThe chair you purchase should have a good lumbar support system that supports the natural s curve of the spine. It should be contoured to the body and feel firm against the users back, but it should not create any pressure points. The best lumbar support will allow the user to adjust up and down and front to back.

4. ContourThe contour of the chair should allow for fluid movement and not restrict in any way. It should allow the user to easily reposition themselves while providing proper support to the thighs and back. It should allow the user to pull the chair close to the keyboard without any restrictions.

5. Breathable fabricLeather may look impressive but it's not a good choice if you are going to be sitting in the chair all day. Choose a fabric that breathes so that you do not sweat excessively. The new mesh style chair has become quite popular because it provides excellent air flow for the user.

6. Adjustable armrestsThe armrests should have ample up and down adjustments. There resting position should allow a minimum of a half inch from the bottom of the elbow. The should provide ample room fro freedom of movement when typing and they should not restrict your ability to pull the chair close to the keyboard.

7. Tilt seatThe seat should be wedge shape, slightly thicker at the back sloping gently forward. It should also be adjustable so the user can set to the correct position for their body shape. A tilt seat will also prevent you from sliding. Not only should the seat be slanted it must be well padded. Cheap padding breaks down very quickly leaving the tailbone area to rest on a hard surface. This can cause sever irritation to the tailbone. A thickly padded chair will provide the comfort level required to sit all day long.

8. Sturdy coastersYour office chair should come with five sturdy coaster that will allow for easy movement even on carpet. A well balanced coaster system will prevent the chair from tipping.

Spending a little time to choose an office chair with the right features will help productivity and reduce injuries.
