Whether you’re new to internet marketing or you’re an old hat at it, you still need a mentor! Why? Well, if you’re a “newbie” (as my teenagers say), to this process you’ve already discovered that there is a vast ocean of information out there which is ever changing. It will only be a matter of time before you feel like you’ve been set a drift, on a life boat, with a slow leak in it, if you don’t have a mentor. There’s just way to much information to know, so you need someone to take you by the hand and direct you step by step. Talk to any veteran, there are way too many facets involved in internet marketing to go it on your own. There is always someone who knows more than you or does a better job at a certain aspect that you can glean from, so why wouldn’t you work with the mentor? So by now, if you’re a newbie, you’re probably wondering why in the world would I even begin this internet marketing journey. You’re thinking you’ll be a tortoise forever, you’ll never catch up to the hare or the market will be saturated before you even get your feet wet! Well, that’s where the encouraging part comes in. The internet and specifically internet marketing, is growing exponentially, so there’s plenty of room for all. How many people do you know who now shop online regularly? Only a few short years ago, many of those same people thought that the term mouse was used only in reference to the small rodent that wreaked havoc in their house or the web was something that pesky spider spun in unwanted places? People are flocking to the internet as never before. The opportunity is wide open for those wanting blaze their own trail internet marketing trail. With a mentor alongside you, you can quickly and easily move out of that tortoise position to earning a lucrative income online. Hopefully, you’re not still thinking you can figure this thing out on your own. If you are let me give you a reality check right where it hurts – your pocket book. Read blogs or articles, etc. written by any veteran marketer and you will soon discover they all have one thing in common. What’s that? As veterans they’ve all been through the war – the battle for their dollar. They have all poured significant amounts of money into training materials and seminars , many even to the point of debt.. While a lot of this information is valuable, much is not. Through much costly trial and error, these veterans have learned what it takes to be successful. So, why on earth, would you want to bypass this goldmine of knowledge to try to figure it out by yourself? Okay, now you get it, you need a mentor, so how do you choose one? There are a ton of people out there claiming to be “The Guru” of internet marketing, so do you just drop their names in a hat and pick one? What I recommend, after getting a sore behind from far too many hours searching for that illusive “Yoda” figure, is to find someone who speaks your language. What do I mean by that? Read their blogs, articles, emails, etc. if they’re easy to understand, have trainings that suit your style of learning, already market in ways you want to learn, have an integrity level you are comfortable with, and have reached a degree of success that you desire to attain, etc., then you’ve found a possible mentor. Before you take the mentorship plunge though, check out what others have to say about your chosen person. Has their training been useful to them, have they earned knowledge and income since mentoring with them, and is this mentor able to take them to the next level of learning they need to grow their business? As my grandma use to say the “proof is in the pudding”, anyone can say anything they want about themselves, so it’s always good check with a mentor’s students. A good mentor is worth his weight in gold! Now you have your mentor, what’s next? The reason race horses wear a bit and a bridle intially is so the jockey can hold them back at the gate. Once the race begins, he will use it to guide and direct along the track, same with your mentor. Let him/her do the leading and set the pace. Many burn out quickly in this business because they don’t pace themselves. I emailed my mentor at the onset of my intern training with him to see if he could send me all of the trainings at one time, so I could work on them at warp speed. I’m sooooo thankful they had the wisdom not to do that. Long and the short of it, let your mentor mentor you, let them lead and you follow. So, take the time to find a good mentor. Internet marketing is such an exciting journey when you have someone to guide you along the way. . Next time, we’ll talk about how my mentor lead me to find a “niche” market just right for me…
