A Guide to Getting Mini Gastric Bypass
|
Among the solutions to morbid obesity out there, one that is gaining a lot of prominence, and with good reason, is the mini gastric bypass. It is a fairly simple procedure, which probably accounts for the ‘mini’ in its name. It is also considered to be a faster as well as more effective than other similar operations such as the roux en y bypass and the laparoscopic band surgery, or lap band surgery. The success of mini gastric bypass is precisely its simplicity. Basically, it is done by reducing the stomach area to about 10% of its original size, and the small intestine is likewise shortened, wherein the lower portion is connected next to the stomach. The procedure is simple enough that a patient can be checked out within a day of surgery. With this done, a person has the ‘full’ feeling much sooner than before, and thus is able to cut their diet to what is necessary for sufficient nutrition. The roux en y, or RNY gastric bypass, on the other hand, is a more complicated procedure, where the small intestine is also reduced but connects to the stomach into a ‘Y’ shape. Not only does this require a longer recovery time after surgery, but studies show that it is not as effective in getting people to lose weight and stay slim in the long term. There is also a greater chance for complications afterwards. While lap band surgery is another option to consider, there are some risks associated with it. First of all, the procedure involves the placing of a kind of ring around one’s stomach, so as to adjust the size of the area where food could reside in temporarily. In some cases, however, control of the laparoscopic band is lost, thus preventing any later adjustments. It is also possible for the band to be absorbed into the stomach, rendering it just as useless. After weighing all your options, it is only sensible to go with the weight loss remedy with the least complications and that is most effective. Not to say that there are no risks whatsoever with the mini gastric bypass, but these mostly occur when the reconstruction of the small intestines and stomach are done the wrong way. With the right team to perform the operation, the benefits of surgery will last for a lifetime. Whatever procedure you seek, make sure that you weigh all the risks associated with surgery.
