Running from the 8th to the 9th of October 2008, the World Fruit & Vegetable Show is a remarkable trading opportunity for production and marketing businesses serving the fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, dried fruit and nuts sectors. Visitors from across the UK and western Europe are in attendance to look over the products and services being demonstrated. Set to take place at ExCel, London, the two-day event is a 'trade-only' show that targets producers, retailers, packers and exporters, importers, distributors, wholesalers and foodservice purchasers. Service providers for packaging, labels and related machinery would also benefit from participating in the event in order to expand their client base. The World Fruit & Vegetable Show was originally targeted at the markets in the UK, with RED Communications handling all of the public relations. However, the focus has expanded this year due to the large number of visitors, including decision makers and those with purchasing power, that came from approximately 34 countries. The 2008 event is expected to include even more forums and better support for exhibitors than in previous years as well as an international marketing campaign. The event's organizers recognize that the UK's fresh fruit and vegetable market is currently valued at £7.6 billion. Approximately 38.1% of the market is held by the fresh fruit sector, which, along with the vegetable sector, has increased in popularity due to the publicity regarding the benefits of regular consumption of fruit and vegetables. In light of the increased interest in healthier diets, and as a result, the fruit and vegetable markets, this event has increasingly gained importance in the UK. At the inaugural 2007 event, exhibitors from 22 countries, offering a range of produce and services, were present. This wide range brings a world view flavour to the event, drawing upon the best that each country has to offer into a single location with the world's decision makers and purchasers in attendance. The show is also expected to feature a number of special forums. The food miles debate and the rules of exporting will be covered, as will the technology being used in the production of fresh produce. The “DEFRA PEACH” system will also feature as a special forum. An interesting focus of the show will emphasize current issues with regard to the supply of credit and the impact of oil prices on producers and the retail market. Professor John Moverley OBE is expected to host a forum detailing the current pressures for land and the manner in which issues created by such pressures have an impact on the price and supply of fruit and vegetables.
