A Vitamin C Overdose Can Be Dangerous
|
The recommended daily dose of vitamin c is between 75 and 90 mgs yet most vitamin c products offered over the counter in drug and grocery stores contain much higher doses, usually from 500 to 1000 mgs. The companies that produce these also usually recommend taking up to four doses a day. In addition, there are natural health advocates and others who recommend mega doses as high as 15,000 mgs per day. This can be dangerous and lead to a vitamin c overdose. For years it was believed that people could take as much of this vitamin as they wanted and never suffer any ill effects from a vitamin c overdose. However, that is proving to be untrue because while the body will only absorb the amount of vitamin c it needs it does not always easily get rid of the excess amount of the vitamin. As a result there can be side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, or even joint pain that can sometimes be serious. A vitamin c overdose may be especially serious for people who have diseases that overload their systems with iron since Vitamin c makes them absorb even more iron. The presence of vitamin c overdose side effects should not discourage people from taking the vitamin because it is definitely needed by the body for good health. However, massive overdoses should be avoided because they have not proven to be helpful and in rare cases can cause harm. Most people have no problems with taking more than the recommended doses of vitamin c and there are few problems experienced with doses of up to 1,000 mgs per day. In fact most people take at least 500 mgs per day since smaller doses are hard to find. Problems may develop with much larger doses however so it is always important to consult with a doctor before taking such large doses.
