Accident Lawyers New York City Will Fight For You

For most people, talking on the phone and driving may seem like a relatively safe thing to do because most people don't necessarily need both of their hands to drive, but what many people don't know is that it is one of the leading causes in automobile accidents in the United States according to accident lawyers in New York City. As millions of people hit the road everyday in the United States more than half of them admit to using their phone while driving. It has been estimated that more than 5,000 accidents a day are contributed to drivers being distracted as a result of using a cell phone. According to statistics released by AAA another main cause of accidents is text messaging while driving. Text messaging has become a very popular way for teens and young adults to communicate without having to pick up the phone. Text messaging is done by using the keypad of a cell phone to create a message that is sent to another cell phone, similar to sending a short email. Statistics have shown that drivers between the ages of 18-30 are the cause of 83% of car accidents that can be contributed to text messaging. Just recently in Upstate New York five teens were killed when the driver, distracted by text messaging, did look up to see that she had crossed over a lane of traffic and collided head on with an oncoming truck. As a safety precaution some states have passed laws banning the use of cell phones while driving, the only exception to it is if the cell phone is attached to a hands free device which will allow the driver to keep both hands on the wheel. In New York a driver can be fined $50 for using a cell phone without a hands free device. People would assume that fining people for using a cell phone while driving would be a very good deterrent for drivers in these states but in reality drivers are still using their cell phones and just placing them in their lap when they drive by police officers. One of the only states that bans the use of text messaging while driving as well as talking on the phone is the state of California, who just passed a law that any driver in California who is caught sending, reading, or writing a text message while driving will be fined $20 the first time and $50 for every offense after.
