Achieving success in medical rep jobs

Always go to work! No so daft as you may think. On 5% of medical rep jobs are visible to managers, the rest is based upon trust along with reporting systems. As a result many medical reps abuse this to avoid having to work a full time role. I've known many experienced rep survive only working 2/3rds the hours they should. If this is you though, you are risking your career and you will never be in the top 10% of performers. If you want to be successful, put in a full days work, everyday, and you will already have an advantage over many of your competitors.

Make every call count. It's very easy to end up making calls for the sake of making calls. After all, this is usually one of the factors measured by managers. Even the best of medical reps will do this from time to time, as nobody can be at their best all of the time. However, the more you can make calls count the better you will do. Always form pre call objectives to add purpose to each call, then always follow a sales structure whilst in a call, rather than simply 'having a chat'. The top performers often don't make more calls than others, but they carry out more structured calls more of the time.

Invest time regularly working out who to call on. Once again it's all too easy to slip into patterns of seeing customers, perhaps those who are easier to see, or less challenging in the call, rather than seeking out those who can really give you the business. It doesn't make much time to do some simple analyses of where the business potential is, which Doctors have a special interest in your area perhaps overlapped with access criteria. This type of basic planning will make your business days much more potent.

Learn from the best. In most companies is usually pretty obvious who's the best in medical rep jobs. If they are a typical medical sales company they will produce regular league tables displaying who the top performers are. Whoever are the winners, there won't be any mystical explanations as to why they are there, there will be tangible reasons why they are on top. The chances are, if you ask them why they are winning they will tell you and you will be able to copy it. It's a simple approach but highly effective, look up your league table and pick up the phone to the top five, there'll be some common themes.

Be resilient. Analyse any business success story and an necessary ingredient on the way to any success story is failure! That's right failure. Most people who are successful often do so because they have failed along the way and learned from it. But ultimately, the reason they succeed is because the failure didn't make them give up, it spurred them on with greater knowledge under their belt.

Medical rep jobs are enjoyable with plenty of freedom and flexibility. Indeed for some, too much freedom and flexibility can create a discipline problem which can be a barrier to success. Follow these basic tips and your performance will improve and help you on the road to success.
