One of the easiest and potentially lucrative ways to start a home business is through affiliate programs. Affiliate programs are programs that are designed for individuals that are willing to promote and sell an existing product or service for some sort of commission. This article will help you understand these programs and help you decide if getting involved in one of these programs is right for you.

Affiliate programs are everywhere. There are literally thousands of them that cover a wide variety of products and services. The idea of affiliate programs is fairly simple. First you find a company that offers an affiliate program (which isn't hard to do at all), sign up as an affiliate, get your affiliate links and whatever other marketing tools they give you; and then your ready to promote. It's just that simple, or is it? Here are some things that you need to consider before becoming an affiliate.

What are You Promoting/Selling - It would be more beneficial to you if you promote something that you already have some general knowledge about or something that interest you. Whatever it is you choose, make sure you learn it inside and out. Remember; you have to pitch the product to potential buyers,you want to be able to know what you are talking about.

Companies Reputation - Take some time to find out about the company that you are working with. Find out how long they have been in business. Read customer reviews and affiliate testimonials. Get as much information as you can. You can even look the company up at the Better Business Bureau to see if they are a member; if they are that is a good start.

Commission Rate - Find out your exact commission for each item that you are selling. Finding this out alone may increase or decrease your interest in that company. I would recommend companies that offer a 25-50% commission on every item sold by you.

Pay Schedule - Decide if their pay schedule works for you. Different affiliate programs have different pay schedules. Some pay weekly, bi-weekly, or even once a month.

Marketing Tools Provided - It is always helpful when an affiliate program provides marketing tools to help you advertise their products. These tools may consist of websites, banners, fliers or business cards.

How and Where to Promote - This is the fun part because there are so many ways you can promote. You can do it via email, online ads, online forums, vidoe marketing (youtube), on social networking sites(mete cafe, digg), newspapers, magazines, fliers, etc... What ever method is most comfortable for you. Create a couple of marketing plans and run with them.

Affiliate programs can bring in some real income that can in turn create a legit home business; but one draw back is that if the company your affiliated with goes down, so do you as their affiliate. This is why I recommend dealing with several different companies. This will create more streams of income and a little more stability.
