Alcohol Intolerance - Reactions to Alcohol

There are many people who have intolerances to certain foods or drinks. However, in some cases, there are people who actually deal with an alcohol intolerance. It is essentially a bad reaction when alcohol is ingested and it happens because there is not enough of Aldehyde Dehydrogenase, which is an enzyme, to help break down the alcohol in the body. If your body can't break down the alcohol, It becomes toxin and there is immediately a response from the body which is much like an allergic reaction. Here's a look at the causes of this problems, some of the symptoms you may notice, and even asthma reactions that can occur to alcohol.

The Causes of Alcohol Intolerance

When it comes to alcohol intolerance, there is a cause. You see, the foods that go into the body need to have enzymes break them down. Many foods are digested in the small intestine and stomach, while there are others that can be absorbed through the gastro intestinal track. Usually alcohol is absorbed this way, but it can't be stored in the body because it is actually toxic, and the body has to oxidize it so that it is eliminated from the body. Only the liver can do this, which is where the needed enzymes are located. However, there are some people that have a problem where the enzyme doesn't work. They are not able to get rid of the alcohol and it causes a bad reaction in the body.

Symptoms You May Notice

If you happen to deal with alcohol intolerance, there are a variety of different symptoms that you may end up noticing. Usually the symptoms that occur are much like regular allergy problems. Often the skin flushes, there is congestion in the head, and sometimes people may experience, pain in the abdomen, headaches, they feel hot, heart palpitations, low blood pressure, and more. In many cases this reaction occurs in people who are from an oriental descent.

Asthma Reactions to Alcohol

In some cases, when it comes to alcohol intolerance, there can be asthma reactions that occur as well. About 30% of people who deal with asthma say that drinking wine can end up making their asthma problems worse. Often they end up wheezing after they have had alcohol. I some cases it can be preservatives that cause this, but in other cases it can be other triggers that cause the problems. People who do have asthma should take care when they are drinking alcohol to make sure that they don't end up dealing with problems due to alcohol intolerance.
