Arranged Marriages - Is There an Appeal

While arranged marriages are not really a topic that you hear so much about today, they still exist and they have been around for a long time. It used to be very common place, and still today many romance novels explore this interesting type of marriage. It seems that in some ways we have a fascination with this type of marriage, although most of us don't covet that type of marriage ourselves. So, if you are interested in learning more about them, here is some more information and history about arranged marriages.

You'll Find it in BooksFirst of all, while arranged marriages may not come up a whole lot in everyday life, you will find that many books actually discuss it and deal with this subject intimately. Many of the romance novels you'll find out there deal with these types of marriages. Often the heroine will enter a loveless marriage that is arranged for the money she needs or because she just needs to have a father for her children. Usually by the end up the book, it's easy to see that they are falling in love. However, does it really all work out just like it does in these romance novels?

A Long HistoryYou'll find that arranged marriages actually have a very long history. In fact, they have been around for thousands of years. Basically what would happen is the parents of a son and a daughter would plan out marriages that were good for the family name and the finances, and the children would have to abide by their wishes. In other cultures, the man would choose a woman and arrange it with her family, and this is still considered to be an arranged marriage. There have been many stories throughout history of marriages that were arranged, and some were full of love and others were not much more than a business arrangement.

Today it is Still UsedEven today you'll still find that arranged marriages are being used. Many countries such as Iran, India, Japan, Afghanistan, and Iraq are still going with these types of marriages. You'll even find that they sometimes occur in North America as well. Many times young people know from the time that they are small that they are supposed to marry a certain perdon.

Does it Really Work? So, the question is, do arranged marriages really work out? Well, there are many different opinions on the topic. However, a look at statistics show that divorce rates among people who are involved in arranged marriages are much lower than the divorce rate in the U.S. today where usually marriages are not arranged. In some cases though, many think that this is due to the pressure from families to keep the marriage together, and divorce may not even be an option for arranged marriages. On the other hand, in many cases love really does grow out of these marriages in the long run.
