However, you can be creative to get the most out of the attic storage that you do have at your home. You can do plenty even if you only have enough room as an extra closet or a small room. There can be small doors in your home that allow you to access what are known as knee walls. There isn't much headroom offered in them though which can make it more complicated to place your items for storage in there. Yet you may still be able to use the space to stack boxes of items when you don't have adequate attic storage.
Before you place anything for attic storage though you need to look into a few things. First, you need to make sure it is safe to place your items in. Does the location offer plenty of ventilation as well as insulation? These are necessary so you don't have a drastic change with humidity as the seasons change outdoors. There should be vents to and from the attic that work properly so that harm air can circulate in the winter and cooler air can circulate in the summer.
You can add your own ventilation for attic storage with a fan to at least keep fresh air circulating. You want one that will automatically turn on when the temperature reaches a certain temperature. This automatic turn on and turn off switch is a very important part of the process. You definitely don't want to increase the risk of a fire breaking out in your home. With a proper sensor in place they will work to keep you safe as well as keep the rate of humidity low in your attic.
While you can get by without insulation in an attic, you want to have it in place if at all possible. That way you will be able to have attic storage all year long without any problems. You will find your other areas of the home stay warmer or cooler depending on the time of year if you have the attic properly insulated as well. Look for solutions to keep humidity from building up too if it is a common problem where you live.
Another aspect of attic storage you need to evaluate is how sturdy it is. Will it reasonably be able to hold the weight of what you put in? If not you may need to enhance it with floor joists. Make sure you have a good way into the attic too such as a folding staircase or a ladder. If you haven't explored the idea of attic storage then you really should. It can be the perfect way for you to avoid clutter in your home. It also means you won't need to get rid of those items you want to hang onto.
