Autism Still Cant Be Cured

In recent years there has been an apparent rise in the number of autism cases being diagnosed and medical science is still far from finding a cure for this illness that is far more common in boys than girls. Autism is a developmental disorder that may start showing its first signs when a child is still an infant. This first sign is often manifested in the inability of the child to interact socially with people. Parents may see the child failing to respond to them or focusing intently on one object for an extraordinary period of time. As the child grows older this symptom often gets worse with the child either acting inappropriately or not interacting at all with others.

Children with autism often have trouble developing communication skills. This includes verbal and non verbal skills. They may talk little or say inappropriate things. They usually will not look another person in the eye and have no understanding of facial expressions or other forms of expression. They may also become easily fixated on something and begin making repetitive movements such as rocking back and forth. They can also engage in behavior that is dangerous to themselves such as banging their head against a wall or biting themselves or other people.

When a child has autism they may not like to be touched by other people and may be overly sensitive to light and sound. It is also common for them to develop other problems such as epilepsy or Tourette syndrome. Because of all these problems the child with autism will have a great deal of difficulty learning, particularly in a traditional learning environment such as a mainstream classroom. The child is also usually unable to play with other children or interact with teachers or classmates in an appropriate manner.

Scientists are not even sure what causes autism and although there is considerable ongoing research it is doubtful that a cure will be found any time soon. However, there are some effective treatments for the symptoms of autism. The seizures and depression that often occur in people with autism can be controlled by medication. In addition, therapists have developed effective techniques for helping autistic children learn in a tightly controlled and structured learning environment. This can help them build necessary communication skills and also help parents and siblings be better able to cope with a member of the family that has autism. Autism can range from a mild form to severe forms so parents should be aware of the symptoms to watch for in their children.
