Avoiding the heartbreak of lost luggage

Lost luggage is one of the worst situations in the world of travel. There is no feeling quite as bad as getting to the baggage claim, watching bag after bag roll by, only to discover that your luggage hasbecome lost luggage. While the chances of any particular piece ofluggage becoming a piece of lost luggage may be low, when ithappens to you, you will never forget it.

Fortunately, there are concrete steps every traveler can take to reducethe chances of becoming the victim of lost luggage. The traveler doesnot have to be at the mercy of the airlines; he or she can take steps toavoid the problem at the outset with a little planning and foresight.

Perhaps the simplest and yet most effective way to avoid theheartache of lost luggage is to simply purchase a good luggage tag.Luggage tags are very cheap, but it is important to make sure that youinclude enough information to get your lost luggage safely back to youshould you become separated. The luggage tag should of courseinclude your name and a phone number where you can be reached (acell phone probably works best). It is best to include the address ofyour office for safety sake, instead of providing your home address orthe address of your hotel.

One thing that many people overlook when it comes to avoiding lostluggage is the importance of distinctive looking luggage. Anyone whohas ever seen the endless stream of identical black bags at thebaggage carousel can easily picture someone walking off with thewrong bag. This situation can be even worse that the lost luggagesituation caused by the airline, since it can be a lot harder to get thosebags back to their owners.

This is another reason why the luggage tag is so important to avoidinglost luggage. If the bag is properly tagged, it can easily be returned toits owner, moving it from lost luggage to found luggage in a matter ofminutes.

Of course it is also a good idea to make your bag as distinctive lookingas possible to prevent it from becoming lost luggage in the first place. If you are the proud owner of one of those identical black bags wetalked about, adding a colorful luggage strap or a bright orangeluggage tag can help you instantly tell your bag from all the others atthe airport.
