Azospirillum - Helping Crops Naturally
|
Many times when we hear about bacteria, we immediately think of the harm that it can do. The truth is, though, that there are a lot of beneficial bacteria. In fact, we harbor helpful bacteria in our bodies every day. Azospirillum naturally feeds nitrogen to the roots of plants, and on top of this it helps plants develop more root hairs, which makes them even more efficient at drawing water from the soil around them. In climates where long dry spells can be a problem, this benefit of adding Azospirillum is a big one. Azospirillum even goes a step further by prompting plants to grow even more roots than they normally would. Once again, this makes them more efficient when it comes to getting the water and nutrients that they need. With everything that this wonder bacteria can do for plants, though, it's been found that it doesn't always work everywhere. Biologists believe that part of the problem could be that other nutrients that are needed for the bacteria to do their job are missing in some places, but studies continue. The majority of crops that have this bacteria introduced to them reap the benefits, and production is increased exponentially. The introduction of Azospirillum means that a lot less inorganic fertilizer will be needed, though some is often still needed alongside the bacteria. Eventually, many biologists hope to improve conditions in which the bacteria work, making them beneficial for more and more farmers. In addition to this, biologists are continuing to search for other organic and natural methods that will increase crop production while keeping the environment around them healthy. We will always need our crops to feed ourselves and to feed our livestock, and the best thing to do is learn how to grow them so that they don't hurt the environment. About The Author: |
