Baby Hair - Caring for Your Tot's Tresses
|
Babies are rarely born with a lot of hair. Most of the time newborn baby hair is very soft and fine; and almost velvety to the touch. During this time it is perfectly okay to clean your baby's head and hair with the same gentle soap that you use on the rest of her body. Of course, you want to use a baby soap that won't sting the eyes; but there is no reason that you have to use a separate baby shampoo for the head. The baby soap that you choose for your baby's bath should be gentle enough for her head and baby hair as well. You want to make sure, however, that you rinse the head and the hair carefully but thoroughly so that your baby's hair follicles are not clogged by soap remnants. As your baby gets older you want to pay more attention to cleaning the baby hair. You always want to be gentle with her hair while you are cleaning it, and avoid tangling as you wash it. Baby scalps can be very sensitive, and it can hurt them if you are constantly trying to untangle their hair. If your baby's or young child's hair grows long enough, it is perfectly okay to trim the hair or bangs to make the hair easier to care for. Also, as your baby gets older you may want to change over to using baby shampoo to clean her hair instead of the regular baby soap. Take care to buy baby shampoo that is not too harsh, and only use shampoos that are formulated for babies. Often very young babies will have a sort of baby dandruff called "cradle cap". This is not unusual and is characterized by a flaky scalp. Regular washing with a gentle shampoo should keep the problem in check, but if it seems extreme you can consult with your pediatrician. As your baby grows and her baby hair gets longer, you may want to start styling it. It's important to remember that your baby and young child's scalp is still more sensitive than yours, so if you are going to style her hair, make sure it's nothing severe. No tight rubber bands or hair clips that could possible poke her scalp. Headbands can be a wonderful way to style your baby's hair while still making sure she is comfortable.
