Barriers To Communication - How To Deal With Them And How To Communicate Better With Other People

There are some things that you may need to know if you want to communicate well. Because our words do not contain meaning, but they transform themselves in our minds, other things, like gestures, must contribute to the determination of the right meaning.

The world around us is filled with information. You cannot perceive reality without translating this information through your brain. It is not surprising, then, that different people have different perceptions of the same things. Our minds make it unique and our experiences vary from individual to individual. When you send a message, you choose which details you want to transmit forward to the receiver and you focus on things that you consider important. This procession is called selective perception. On the other hand, the receiver of the message, you need to fit the new information acquired into your thinking pattern. That is why, if the details receive do not conform to the existing pattern, you are inclined to distort them to make them fit the pattern and not the other way around.

Sometimes, when we are trying to transmit a message, we are also facing a different problem. We do not always deliver the message directly, but we use intermediaries, like, for instance, in business, we need to send someone a message through secretaries and other employees. All these people act like filters for the information, because they take the information and they translate it before sending it forward. For eliminating such problems, it is commendable to use more than one communication channel, without using too many people between you and the receiver of your message and trying to keep the message simple.

There are also other barriers in communication that you need to overcome. Different languages belong to different cultures and subcultures. They have particular codes that influence the way the message is transmitted. So a certain word can have different meanings which can become a real issue. It is important to know your audience and use words that can be understood by them. Proper language must include presentations of facts, events and circumstances, so a clear image can form in the minds of your receivers.

Another problem can come from the part of the receiver. They can simply be poor listeners. You may notice that even when you try hard to concentrate, your mind drifts off when the information delivered is hard to understand. In order to get the message right, you must paraphrase what you understood and refrain from getting conclusions before the communication stops. It is also recommended to ask for things you did not understand and to listen carefully.

When we communicate, we interact with one another. That is why the emotional state of the two parts of the communication, the sender and the receiver, is also important. It is not surprising that if such is the case, the communication stops before due time, as the receiver tends to develop negative feelings about the things that are being said. When emotions are involved, there is a higher chance to distort the information then in normal conditions. You must learn how to keep your emotions at bay when you want to communicate something. Otherwise, you will not get the desired effect from your audience. Also, when you transmit emotional messages, be careful about the chance of misunderstanding that is also high in such circumstances.

There are also other barriers in communication that include the particular background of an individual. Every person has a background consisting of personal traits like age and gender, and continuing with religious belief, state of health or temperament. This mix can become a serious barrier in communication, but it can be overcome by avoiding any intrusion in someones particularities and by not trying to impose what you think and what you believe on others.
