Baseball Fabrics

Many different baseball fabrics have been used in baseball uniforms throughout the century. Americans love the game of baseball the way it is, but they also worship the sport for what it has been. We adapt with changes in uniforms very quickly. One thing is certain, more than 4000 different uniform style have been worn by Major League ballplayers since 1876!

Baseball fabrics in uniforms were either 100% wool flannel or a blend of part cotton and part wool. Can you imagine playing ball in the summer with temperatures and humidity while wearing these incredibly heavy uniforms? It seems ridiculous. But they did, and with much enthusiasm. The weight of these wool and cotton flannels were gradually reduced by half but the durability and shrinkage had not improved much. Synthetic fibers made the way for improved blends. The most successful was the in the 60's with the wool / orlon blend. But the double-knit fabrics introduced later on provided more attractive and practical features over flannel. They were lighter, cooler, more comfortable and more durable. Hence the use of the flannel materials for baseball uniforms is history.

All baseball fabrics for uniforms for home teams were white. On the road, the uniforms were gray or a darker color. The material was a heavy wool flannel. Pin striping in the fabric first appeared in 1907.

Another type of baseball fabric is home dcor that you would buy to decorate a room with. Little boys love to have this motif on their curtains and pillows. They dream of being big baseball stars one day. There are many colors and patterns to choose from .

You can make the headboard and cover it with batting and then with a great fabric fitting with the theme. Pillows are fun and easy to make. Make them look like big baseballs with fabrics that coordinate. Make bean bags as toys for the room. Find a favorite color and make the curtains to match the other fabrics. Bulletin boards will be noticed when using the baseball fabrics as the background fabric . add your pictures and other memorabilia.

Quilters also love to purchase baseball fabrics. They make quilts for sports fanatics and use lots of baseball motifs. Trip Around the world is one great pattern for such a quilt. Let your little one choose his own fabric. Make it special and it is sure to be a quilt that is enjoyed for years to come.

Use baseball fabrics when decorating for a birthday party. Throw a fun themed party and just use your fabrics to enhance the party table or chairs. Make a table cover or chair covers to show what theme you are going with. The little boys or big boys in your life will love the extra mile you go to make the party special. Lots of smiles will await you when you choose baseball fabrics to help with party decorations.
