Battery Light: What To Do When It Goes On

Many people believe that the battery light goes on when the battery is low, but the reality is that that happens when the alternator no longer charges the battery.

In order to make things right, you will need to have a car alternator and car batteries.

The battery light is important because it signals a thing that you need to take into consideration. First, find a spot to pull over, and you can take your time, as you will still have half an hour until the charge goes off completely.

To prevent the battery going deplete too soon, you need to save energy, by shutting down the radio, the heater, the headlights and the wipers.

Any accessories that use the battery energy must be avoided for use, like the horn, the power windows or the flashers.

You must keep your engine running before you stop completely. If you begin turning your engine on and off, you will consume the battery sooner than you think.

The best solution is to reach an auto repair shop, if it is in your area, and ask the mechanic to run some tests on the vehicle.

Here is a small guide for what to do when no auto repair shops are in sight.

Stop the car, shut the engine down and remove the hood from the car.

Check the battery cable ends for signs of corrosion. If that happened, then you will notice some whitish or bluish powder on them. Wipe them clean with a wire brush.

The cables from the battery needs to be tight, so you cannot turn them.

The first thing you need to check is the negative cable end; see if it is tight enough and secure.

Continue your verifications with the alternator belt, as a loose one will cause malfunction in the alternator, making it not able to charge.

Then, verify the connections of the alternator, to see if they are totally secure.

A thing that may happen, but very rarely, is a broken light. It is worth checking, though. Be careful when the battery light is on: if you ignore it, finally your engine will stop and you will not be able to move the car anymore. Nothing depending on the battery will work, not the radio, not the lights. You may succeed into getting your car to work again, but after many tries. If the alternator is undercharging, you may have a few more days with your car, but if the alternator is broken or the battery is too old, you may discover that your car will have just a coupe of hours until it dies completely.
