I've spent many holidays scouring the streets of central London, trying lots of different chocolate truffles, spending hours tasting each one and finding out exactly how they are made. I can tell you there are lots of differences. The first tip I have when buying any chocolates is to check the sell by on the box. If it lasts a few months, then that means there are a most likely artificial preservatives. As with most foods, the fresher they are, and the less preservatives the better. My favourite chocolate in greater London is Sobo Chocolate. Formed in 2007 by two self taught chocolatiersthey make delicious gooey cookies, fresh handmade truffles and the most fantastic other treats you could ever find. It's all made in North London, and their chocolates take some beating. There are no preservatives in there, so everything tastes fantastic. You can find their goods all over London in a few cafes, such as Brill or even at Eat 17 who stock the giant cookies that have made the Sobo brand famous in London. Helen and James were working in Australia on their boring desk jobs, and decided they wanted a bit more to life. Inspired by some of the amazing chocolatiers you'll find in Australia - Koko Black and Max Brenner, we wanted to bring fresh chocolates to England and bring marvellous chocolate to everyone. The first time we made chocolate - we had a bunch of friends round for a dinner party - each and every one of them was connected with Milton Keynes in some strange way. Amongst those that were there was Dobson, part of the design dream team that would create the Sobo Brand, with help from the legendary Bobby. Earlier that day, James had received a book from Amazon on how to make chocolates, and spent the making them. The feedback on his dark, hand dipped truffles was fantastic (in a good way).
