Big Game fishes

Big game fishermen generally target large bony fish such as the tuna and marlin. Sometimes it is good to get out of your home and take a twelve pack and some friends and just go party on a boat with some big game fishing. The appeal of any type of game fishing is catching the fish. You have to work really hard to catch a prize tuna or marlin to have stuffed and place on your wall at home or in your restaurant.

Big game fishing is a sport that takes a lot of strength and endurance. If you don not possess these attributes and have any lack of patience, then big game fishing is not for you. The average cost in UD currency is typically 20,000 on the tackle alone. You have to charter a boat unless you already own one and this is no easy matter unless you have a friend who is a captain and knows how to steer while trying to catch a big game fish. You must be pretty rich to pull off doing this sort of activity on a regular basis.

The biggest bony fish is the ocean sunfish weighing up to over 5,000 pounds and over 10 feet in length. The longest fish in the world is the oarfish which can be over 15 feet in length. The marlin and sturgeon species of fish are also among the largest big game fish in the world.

Now let’s talk about those big game sharks. There are over 350 species of described shark types. It is said that the first sharks first came into being about 300 to 400 million years ago, known today as the Jurassic period of evolution.

Sharks come from eight different orders. Hexanchiformes look like marine snakes but are actually cow sharks and frilled sharks. Squaliformes are bramble sharks, dogfish sharks and roughsharks. Pristiophormes are sawsharks that use the saw to cut other fish, and you if you are in ones way, and eat them. Squatiniformes are angel sharks. Heterodontiformes are commonly referred to as the horn sharks or bullhead. Orectolobiformes usually are referred to as the carpet sharks and include the zebra shark, nurse shark, wobbegongs and the whale shark which is the largest of all the fishes. Carcharhiniformes are referred to as the groundsharks and they include the blue, tip, reef and tiger sharks along with the catsharks, hammerhead sharks and houndsharks. They are distinguished by their elongated snouts and eye protecting nictitated membrane. Lamniformes are commonly referred to as the mackerel sharks. These include the goblin shark, basking shark, megamouth shark, thresher shark, mako shark and the great white shark. These sharks, like jaws, are distinguished by their huge jaws and ovoviviparous reproduction.

Shark mating has not often been seen or recorded by humans. Most sharks are not very flexible and have special flaps called claspers that are inserted into the female shark’s oviduct while swimming parallel. Female sharks of the larger species usually have bite marks on their fins. This is because a male shark will sometimes bite or nibble on the female shark to let it know it wants to mate. Female sharks have evolved thicker skins to keep from getting injured during or before the mating process.

Big game fishes are not to be taken for granted. They are tough creatures that you should treat with a degree of respect or else you may one day find yourself face to face with a great white shark that has an attitude problem.
