What causes blackheads?
The appearance of blackheads on the skin surface is caused by the oil secreting glands. When you take a close look at the skin you can see that the pores are covered with these blackheads. Every pore is filled with sebum produced by the sebaceous glands and, being open to the action of the air, the upper part of the oily substance hardens and oxidizes, getting a black color. The oil does not stop from being produced and, therefore, it pushes the black part towards the surface. This gives the skin that unaesthetic look.
The exact causes for the increased activity of the sebaceous glands have not been identified. Some people experience blackheads only during puberty, so the cause is depending on the activity of the hormones in the body. On the other hand, others have problems with the appearance of blackheads long after the puberty, even during adulthood. Also, they may experience whiteheads, which are similar with the blackheads, with the single difference that the pores remain closed and they do not oxidize, so the black color does not appear.
Another thing about blackheads is that they are also responsible for the appearance of acne. The oil gland gets infected because it is covered by the blackhead, so if you fight against blackheads, you will also have good results in the prevention of acne.
Tips for removing blackheads
Here are some tips you may find useful for controlling and removing blackheads:
1. Clean your skin on a regular basis, using products that prevent it from becoming too oily. Try cleansers, astringent solutions or masks that leave your skin clean and oil free. Stay away from soaps that may irritate your skin or cosmetic products that leave the skin covered in oil.
2. Remove the dead cells from the surface of your skin, so your pore can breathe, by using a gentle exfoliant.
3. Do not squeeze or scrap the blackheads. The result will be an irritated skin, with bigger pores and that will lead to the appearance of more and larger blackheads.
4. There are methods for clearing up the pores without making more damage. Use a warm compress of water, by pressing it gently on the area with blackheads. This will help you remove them.
5. Use cosmetic strips that can be found on the market, but use them with extra care. These strips, which are made of a tape like substance, are applied on the nose and then are pulled off along with some of the blackheads. Read the label print and then apply them by following the instructions step by step.
