Bodine Wins Chevy Silverado 250
|
The 100-lap race witnessed a somewhat difficult and troublesome event. According to reports, a third of the field was taken out by Lap 23, and after that it was a matter of endurance as Bodine grabbed victory. Bodine, 43, driving the No. 30 Toyota, fended off a charge by Johnny Benson Jr. and Kyle Busch. This happened in the final seconds of the Daytona race. In the same position as the previous year, Benson was trying to catch Travis Kvapil and Jack Sprague. For the second consecutive year, he came up just short. Five of the six NASCAR previous champs competing closely in the race was no longer an issue by lap 42 due to the turnout of events. Mike Skinner, Mike Bliss and Ted Musgrave were caught up in wrecks. Ron Hornaday, meanwhile, was left with a gear concern. Also, Jack Sprague, the defending champ experienced continuing front splitter issues. Only half of the field was on the lead lap by the midway point. A drastic change in the race was seen with 13 laps to go when Erik Darnell and Justin Marks, at the time second and third respectively behind Bodine, got together exiting Turn 4. The collision left Bodine to deflect Johnny Benson Jr., Kyle Busch, David Starr, Stacy Compton and Dennis Setzer with nine laps to go. “I waved him off down the backstretch and coming down into 4 it looked like he just got into the back of me,'' said Darnell. “We had a vibration there and I think we could've overtaken (Bodine).'' Bodine took the point for a lap before things went twisted in Turn 2 a couple of laps afterward. “It got really wild after that pit stop; really wild,'' said Matt Crafton, driver of the No. 88 Chevrolet. “People were being way too stupid out there. It happens here.'' How bad were the incidents? Kyle Busch's Toyota came down exiting Turn 2 on Skinner's Toyota, which resulted in an eight-truck wreck and brought out the red flag on Lap 19. Skinner, P.J. Jones, Jon Wood, Chad Chaffin, Brendan Gaughan, Ted Musgrave and Andy Lally were all involved in the incident, and the race was red-flagged for 17 minutes and 23 seconds, reported Journal Online.
