Bodyboarding: Board Maintenance

r>Bodyboarding is one of the best water sports ever invented, and for some very good reasons. It is fast and requires unsurpassed reflexes to manage to get all those difficult maneuvers right. It also combines power and control in a way that is unique and rewarding, both for the bodyboarder and for the spectator. There are alls sorts of tricks and amazing maneuvers, such as the ARS or the drop-knee, but in order to get your skills up to expert level you need to follow a few guidelines. Knowing and applying the basics makes this sport fun and challenging, as you will see for yourself when you start bodyboarding.

Let's begin with board maintenance. Waxing the board is a highly important activity that will ensure proper control on the water and excellent maintenance while on land. There are two types of wax that you should use - if you live in a hot part of the world, there is a special warm wax you can buy. On the other hand, if most of your bodyboarding is done in cooler waters, a cooler wax is appropriate. You should wax the top side of the board - where you will need the best handgrip. Also wax the trimming grip edges on your board in order to prevent your hands from slipping off.

Once the board is properly waxed you can head to the water. Once you get there, try to paddle at maximum speed. In time, you will get used to a higher paddling rate and this will enable you to get around the lineup much faster. The increased fatigue will be rewarded by your increased mobility on the water's surface. There are several wave types and catching your wave depends on this. Adapt your with your bodyboard to take off early and late take-off waves, be careful about the point break ones.

However, if you move with enough speed, you can catch any sort of wave. The steepness of the wave will pretty much determine the way you will be able to catch it. Steep waves are the best, since they allow you and your bodyboard to ride them at greater speed. Low intensity waves are sometimes easier to catch, since they are more predictable, but you need a lot of wave sped and power for successful bodyboarding. If the wave is fast enough it will also push you along much harder, giving you enough resources to try some exciting bodyboarding maneuvers.

When the wave is close, try to turn around and paddle, thus preparing to catch the best angle. Experienced bodyboarders know exactly when to paddle hard in order to reach the wave's peak and when to sit calmly, waiting for the wave to come. In case you believe your speed is not enough to reach the peak of the wave, try to lean towards the front side of the board, thus increasing the planning speed. Riding the wave is affected by the angle which you catch. Late drops, for example, need you to go on a straight line down the wave, while point break waves need a certain angle of approach.

Bodyboarding is an excellent sport to keep fit during the summer season, it also a nice and refreshing way of keeping cool during those hot and humid temperatures. If you love being in the water and love feeling a bit extreme, bodyboarding is the right sport for you. It may take you a few falls at first, but practice always makes perfect. When you become skilled enough, attempting tricks and maneuvers can be very entertaining and impressive for your friends and family to watch, but in the end remember just to have fun bodyboarding.
