Breastfeeding (including breastfeeding in public): The difference between foremilk and hindmilk
|
Breastmilk: Did you know there is a difference between foremilk and hindmilk? - By: Nursingwear Page 11: At the beginning of a breastfeed, the milk is relatively low in fat, as the breast, compared to after the feed, is relatively full. This is often refererred to as "foremilk". Important fact:The fat content of the breastmilk is indirectly related to the fullness of the breast, i.e. the fuller the breast the lower the fat content of the milk coming out. Once the let-down reflex works, dome of the fat starts to travel down the ducts and mixes in with the rest of the milk, so that overall the breastmilk starts to become creamier. Gradually, the fat content rises more and more, as the let-down reflex causes the ducts and glandular tissue to contract, aqueezing more of the fat globules off the walls of the glandular tissue and ducts and into the milk travelling down the ducts. Towards the end of the feed, when the breast is relatively empty, the fat content is at its highest for that feed, andthis is called the "hindmlik". You may have heard of "foremilk/ hindmilk imbalance", where a baby seems to be getting enough milk, but not enough fat to put on weight and/ or may be colicky. It is not true that foremilk is significantly higher in in lactose or any other component that the hindmilk. There is usually a higher flow rate at the start of the feed, so in the case of oversuppl or fast flow, a baby may just get too much milk, too fast, rather than too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk. It is worthwhile understanding that these two terms are relative only, in that they describe the milk at the beginning and the end of a particular feed. ... If this all sounds very complicated... don't worry about it, just ignore he terms, and feed your baby as much as he/ she wants and when he/ she wants it. The only times to worry about the milk is if there is too much or too little of it overall, not the "types" of milk.
