Breeding Tropical Fish For Profit
|
Just about all of us have had a fish tank at some time during our life. Most of us can remember having a gold fish bowl as a kid. For some people this led to bigger aquariums and then on to breeding tropical fish for a profit. The tropical fish industry as a whole has seen some dramatic increases in the demand for fish. Much of this is believed to be a result of the number of children’s movies that are based around underwater stories. Its great news for tropical fish breeders and suppliers of aquarium products as it’s meant a nice increase in sales and profits. Raising and breeding tropical fish requires some knowledge and some specialized equipments. Tropical fish need a lot more room than that pet goldfish from your childhood did. You will need an area that is large enough to hold a full tank set up. How many tanks you will need will depend on which tropical fish you are going to breed. When choosing tank sizes and the number of tanks you are going to set up you should also consider the number of offspring that the species you plan to breed normally produces. Some species have hundreds of babies at one time, while others only have a few. Generally with fish that produce large numbers of offspring you will need to cull the batch of those that are deformed, small, too weak, or not up to your standards as a tropical fish breeder. This is an important part of breeding tropical fish because it ensures that no weak species survive that could deteriorate the integrity of the species and it also ensure that you reduce the chance of problems in your tank. Breeding and raising fish to an age where they are mature enough to be sold requires a great deal of patience and time. Some species develop a lot faster than others so if you aren’t sure which species is best for you make sure you do your homework. If you are planning to breed more than one species you also need to make sure they are compatible. The quality of your tank water is critical to the survival of your fish so you need to make sure you invest in a good quality water testing kit and the appropriate water treatments. There are treatments available that remove chlorine and condition the water helping to start the natural bio cycle. There are also treatments available that will lower the PH, reduce ammonia, and cure diseases. Some species are very touchy about their water conditions so make sure you understand the needs of your fish. One sound word of advice that can save you a lot of money, time, and disappointment – try to choose fish that live in conditions closest to your natural water conditions. So if you live in an area where the water is naturally hard choose species that live in these conditions. It will be much easier then continuously using chemicals to adjust the water. You will need to make sure your tanks have adequate filtration to remove the pollutants from the water and help establish a natural eco-system. You can buy all the supplies you will need including food supplies online or from your local pet store. You can also find a wealth of information about almost any tropical fish species online. Make sure you are well educated before you begin your breeding program. Fish fry require special diets until they are large enough to eat regular foods. You can buy liquid food that is designed for fry or you can make your own. Once the young fish are mature enough to sell you will have to either make arrangements with a local pet store to buy them or sell them yourself. Many breeders sell fish online but this requires a great deal of expertise in packing and they must be air shipped for overnight arrival. If you will selling to your local pet stores you are going to have to transport the fish. This also requires some skill and a good deal of timing. There are several methods of packaging fish depending on the distance the fish will travel. The type of packaging will depending on the size of the species and their oxygen requirements. The most common method of transporting fish is to double bag. One bag is turned opposite to the other which prevents the corners from collapsing around the fish and it also prevents added protection against leaking. Tropical fish can be amazingly beautiful and they are so relaxing to watch. It’s amazing how after a bad day sitting and watching those little creatures swim and dart around can change your mood. Breeding tropical fish can be both rewarding and frustrating. The better prepared you are the more likely you are to be successful. You won’t be able to avoid the occasional loss and you will have to be able to deal with the fact that you will need to cull the fry but think of it as an unpleasant task for the betterment of the species. Breeding tropical fish for profit won’t make you rich but it can provide a comfortable income and it can help cover the cost of running your own tanks. You’ll find tropical fish can be quite addictive. The 30 gallon tank soon becomes a 90 gallon tank. You’ll know you are addicted when you are out looking for a bigger house because you want four 120 gallon tanks. Tropical fish breeding is a hobby that can pay well.
