Brian Crane - The Man behind the Pickles

Brian Crane created Pickles. No, he didn't create those tart and tasty treats that are made by marinating cucumbers; he created the cartoon Pickles. This cartoon about the everyday life of an elderly couple and their family and pets is seen in 300 newspapers around the world, and it has some diehard fans. Though he had a bit of a hard time getting this cartoon off the ground, once it was exposed to the public it really took off. Brian Crane did the smart thing and worked around a niche that other cartoonists weren't focusing on; mainly cartoons about older people.

Though the Pickles cartoon has been around for several years, Brian Crane wasn't really sure how much of a following he had. On a whim once, to add some spice to what he was beginning to think was a cartoon that was getting humdrum, he toyed with the idea of giving Mr. Pickles, the elderly patriarch, a beard. Instead of just going ahead and doing it, however, he asked the readers what their opinions were on this possible new addition. Feedback from readers was overwhelming; so much so that Brian Crane felt a little shocked. It turned out that his cartoon has a much bigger following than he had ever imagined.

Brian Crane had been interested in being a cartoonist since he was a boy, but didn't actually try it professionally until he was forty years old. He developed Pickles after doing a little research and finding that nobody was doing any cartoons about elderly people. He created the Pickles as a couple in their seventies, and also included in the cartoon a daughter, who lived with them along with her husband and her son. Add a dog and a cat and you had a recipe for continued humor.

The Pickles cartoon venture got off to a rocky start for Brian Crane. The newspapers that he was submitting it to just weren't seeing it as something they wanted to carry. Ready to throw in the towel, Brian decided to keep trying after some encouragement from his wife. Much to his delight, the cartoon was picked up by the Washington Post syndicate, and then it was off and running. It started off by showing up in 24 newspapers across the country and then syndication of it continued to grow. To this day, Pickles is still a much beloved comic strip for a lot of loyal readers.
