Build Kitchen Cabinet: An Easy To Follow Guide

So, you want to build kitchen cabinets for your kitchen. Usually, this is usually a decision made after a long, hard look for cabinets on the market in your local neighborhood. Sometimes, what you want is just not available with the ease and convenience you desire. There are so many choices for you to decide from or maybe you have specialty cabinets that need to be made. There are some moments when normal kitchen cabinets just won't work. You need something extra - something with pizzazz.

You know you want to build kitchen cabinets for your kitchen needs. Now you must decide whether you want to create them yourself or hire a professional to complete this task for you. Usually, you can find local woodworking craftsman in your area that will do this for a small fee: all you pay is labor and for materials. This may be a copasetic relationship and should be considered if you have no experience with woodworking. Of course, some people are a lot more brave than I am.

You can find local craftsman by looking in the local phone directory. These go by many things and since I really am not that good with a phone directory, I will leave this to your imagination and expertise. Another popular method for finding a craftsman in your area is to do search via the Internet. Usually, you can get one or two hits when you use a search engine properly with the proper Boolean expressions to minimize nonsense. Probably the best way - though not the easiest - to find craftsman in your area is via word of mouth. Many craftsmen depend on this method and this is your best choice for finding a woodworking craftsman in your area. Once you have made contact, the rest is up to you.

Now that I have gotten those people out of the way that needed help finding someone to build kitchen cabinets for them, I will explain the process to the rest of you concerning the creation of your own. The first thing you need is a measuring tape and a pad with a pencil. You will need to measure the room you want to add kitchen cabinets too. I suggest you measure against the wall from corner to corner - from ceiling to floor. You need to have precise measurements for the entire kitchen. I like to make a diagram of the kitchen. This will allow you to see where the sink is and where other such connections such as the stove are located.

Now that you have a general idea of what your bare kitchen looks like, now you need to find a way to design your own kitchen cabinets. I suggest that you search the Internet. There are some awesome programs available that will allow you to put in those measurements on your pad and give you a virtual diagram of your kitchen. Then, that program will help you create your own kitchen cabinets. I have found these programs for free at some of the local home improvement web sites; I have found some that are free that you download and install. I suggest you do what you feel comfortable with.

Usually, you will have a general idea of what you want in your kitchen cabinets. For example, do you want both upper and bottom cabinets? This is important to know. Do you want a built in lazy susy? You need to know what you want and what you expect when you build kitchen cabinets on your own. Of course, there are patterns galore via the Internet for you to choose from. Some of these are free and others may cost a minimal amount. Once again, do what you feel comfortable with. However, I have found a wide array of free patterns to keep me happy for a while.

Of course, you will need tools. If you do not have the tools you need to build kitchen cabinets on your own, you should probably not continue with this and instead look for a local carpenter in your area. Tools are a necessity of building your own cabinets. If you have to buy your tools and the material for your own cabinets, you may be the victim of sticker shock. Having the tools before hand also shows that you are a novice or expert carpenter and will be able to handle the task of building your own kitchen cabinets.

I suggest you take a couple of weekends to complete this task. You will need time to build the base cabinets; then you will need time to decorate them as you see fit. You need to first choose a material that suits your needs. I like a solid wood material, but this can be heavy and is not always an option because of weight or cost. Sometimes, particleboard is a better solution to your need when you build kitchen cabinets yourself. This is not to say that your cabinets will be cheap, just that you are taking a more frugal approach.

Hopefully, you are a bit better handled to build kitchen cabinets on your own. Do you have the aptitude? If so, building kitchen cabinets is a very rewarding experience that will leave you with a lifetime of memories. If not, you will get those memories by telling a carpenter the best way to complete the task. I have found that custom made kitchen cabinets are well worth the extra effort.
