Build Your Own PVS Pipe Scope Stand
|
Wondering what those parts might be? How about the PVC piping that runs through your house? Scavenge some if possible or buy some at your local hardware store. You won't have to spend more than $20. After all you really don't need anything fancy right? Functional is really what's important. So for under $20 and less than a half hour of your time you can build a simple PVC pipe stand. The money you save over purchasing a commercial stand can be used towards buying a better scope. The exact list of pipe pieces you'll need will depend on the height and design you choose. There are many different plans available online that will give you exact specifics. But you'll need some 1 inch diameter straight pipe, caps, 45 degree and 90 degree bends, some tees, and some adapters. Don't forget to pick up some PVC adhesive too. PVC pipe is available in black and white so pick your color. Once you've collected all the bits and pieces you can get to work with your little project. Make sure you know the exact height you need as scopes come in a variety of different heights. If you decide you just don't want to bother with building your own there are plenty of commercial stands on the market. Most are designed specifically to go with a manufacturer's scope but some are universal to make sure you pay attention when buying. Universal is by far the most convenient. The really high quality stands have an aluminum base and legs while the middle of the line use chrome plates steel which is sturdy and won't buckle under pressure. Low end stands are often made of plastic - stay away from these. If you purchase a stand it should have at least one extension, a bipod base, a carry ball, and a head assembly. A swivel head is used for threaded scopes and it lets you have a 90 degree positioning adjustment which is really convenient.Build or buy - that's up to you. If you decide to build a scope stand all you need is 30 minutes, some PVC pipe and glue, and twenty bucks and you'll be in business.
