Building An Outdoor Deck
|
Of course some decks become very complex but the average deck is a fairly simple project as long as you do your planning. Like with any project the success is all in the planning. The more you put into your planning strategy the better your deck will be. Youll need to determine what the size of your deck is going to be. That should all be included in your plans because you want to know how much material you are going to need and youll want this information in advance. With a good plan youll have your materials purchased and delivered before you start the project. Its important to have figured out what your supplies are for a couple of reasons. You wont find yourself short on materials and having to run around picking up supplies and you wont find you ordered too much and wasted money. The bigger your deck is the more its going to cost to build and thats just fine but try to plan your dimensions to work best with standard boards so you have less waste. A great example is building a deck thats 10 feet wide. Of every 12 feet of board you will waste 1 feet. Where as if you had built a 10 foot deck you wont have any waste at all and youll never miss 6 inches. As with any project it tends to be the little things that add to cost. Things lag bolts and hangers. Plan for the minimum amount of additional parts. Think carefully about where you are going to place that deck. Putting it in the right place means it will get used and enjoyed plenty but putting it in the wrong place can mean it doesnt get used so in essence youve wasted both your time and money. The perfect deck shares both the sun and the shade during different periods of the day. If you are able to build your deck so that it goes around the house corner you will get both sun and shade at the same time. If you live somewhere that gets a lot of wind you will want to consider where the wind blows most before installing your deck. A warm summers breeze is great but if your deck is home to heavier winds it wont get used. You will also want to consider privacy. You want your deck to be a place where you can throw a party or sunbathe and you dont want to be looking into the neighbors yard anymore than you wan them looking onto your deck so take this into consideration during your planning stage. If you are able to build your deck so that it goes around the house corner you will get both sun and shade at the same time.Your deck should be accessed from an easy point inside and outside. Often a deck will come off a sliding door which is an excellent choice. When you add a deck to your correctly you change the look of your house, complementing it, and even increasing the value of your home. Remember to make it work with the landscaping you already have in place. A deck worked around natural terrain can have a dramatic impact on the look and feel of your home. So dont be afraid to be creative. Your outdoor deck is going to be a great addition to your home! Are you ready for your new project?
