Building Your Porch Deck

If you are planning to build a porch deck you will be happy to know that this is one of the easier projects you will undertake. Youll be even happier to find out this is a project anyone can accomplish.

You need to start by getting your tools together, coercing a friend to give you a hand. Building parties are becoming really popular. One weekend is spent at one house and then the next weekend at the next members house and on and on until everyones projects are covered. Works great.

If you are adding the porch and the deck youll discover that the porch is actually much easier to build than the actual deck. Oh well building the porch itself will get you warmed up for the deck project.

The deck can be as complicated or as simple as you want it to be. Generally a porch deck is fairly simple but the options really are endless. So youll need to start by figuring out what your deck is going to be.

Will it be a simple 6x4 porch deck or will it be a little more elaborate or a little bigger? You cant buy your wood and other bits and pieces until you have determined what size the deck is going to be.

Usually these type of decks are considerably smaller than an average deck. If you have never built a deck before this is a great way to learn how to build a deck. Then youll be ready for that big deck youve been planning off the second floor patio.

You need to decide what type of wood you are going to use. There are many different hardwood and softwood lumbers. Each have their own unique grain and overall appearance. For example teak and cedar dont look at all alike.

The most important thing is that your wood is pressure treated so that your wood is protected from all of the elements Mother Nature can throw its way. When your deck is finished you can apply a stain, paint, or water sealant to get the desired finish. All will protect the wood. One thing to remember a natural stain with no pigment provides no protection.

It is easy to calculate how much wood you will need once you have your measurements for your deck. In fact there are free programs online that will do the math for you. Dont forget you will need to include your deck beams, screws, plates, and other miscellaneous parts. Its always nice if you can pick up all your parts at once.

If you are unsure about coming up with your own building plan there are lots available online and many of them are free. You can get some great ideas without ever spending any money.

Your porch deck project is going to be one of your easiest projects that you undertake for your home. If you succeed on this project youll be ready to undertake some other interesting projects around the home.
