Building a Good Miter Sled

The most important thing that you want to consider when constructing a miter sled is accuracy. When it comes to miter joints, accuracy can mean the difference between wasting good time and materials and getting everything right the first time. In order to build a sled that will give you the results you want time and time again, you need to start with the right materials. You want the materials that you use to build your sled to be of the highest quality, and you want them to be able to withstand all different kinds of temperatures, all different kinds of pressure, and anything else you plan on putting them through. Also, they must be resistant to moisture damage.

Starting with the base of the miter sled that you will be building, you want to find a good quality wood that can withstand temperatures without warping, and that will expand and contract with rising and falling temperatures without losing its structural integrity. The thickness of the plywood will matter also, and you should probably not get a thickness of any less than inches. You also want a wood that has a smooth surface with no snags or flaws that can impede progress when creating miter joints, and one that is strong and sturdy. Plywood works best for creating your sled, but it has to be a high-quality plywood, such as birch. You will spend more for the high quality plywood than you will for regular plywood, but it is essential that you use the best. Ask the salesperson at the lumber yard, hardware store, or home improvement store to show you the best types of plywood that the store carries, and have him or her explain to you why they are the best. Ask about temperature resistance, strength, and durability. Be sure to check any piece of plywood for flaws before you buy it. You will also want to buy enough plywood so that you can use it to make your miter fence also.

The size of your miter sled will depend on the size of your table saw and the kinds of miter angles that you will be using. It is critical that you measure correctly the first time, or you may find yourself having to start all over again with fresh materials. That can become costly and frustrating. Check with an expert as to what dimensions you should make your sled and your miter fence, and if possible, have somebody draw a simple blueprint for you to use. You could probably even find a book that will explain how to build a miter sled, and you could use the directions and blueprints provided in the book. Many hardware stores or home improvement stores carry a wide variety of "how to" books on building, woodworking, power tools, and woodworking machinery, and with a little searching you can probably find a book that will have instructions for building a good, quality sled for making miter joints.
