The first thing that you want to do is decide what types of jobs you will be using your wood planer for. Make a list of the projects that you think you will be working on in the next few years. If you will be leaving large projects such as home remodeling or adding home additions to a contractor, and just want to use your home workshop for smaller projects, than you'll want to keep this in mind while you are shopping for a planer. If you will be tackling the larger jobs yourself instead of hiring a contractor, then this will be a major consideration when you are shopping for your planer. For smaller woodworking projects, a good quality hand planer will do just fine. Hand planers can come in either manual or electric models, so this is one of the factors you will need to decide on. The manual type of planer will be less expensive of course, and for small woodworking projects a manual planer usually works well. You can buy manual hand planers in several different sizes and styles, but the main thing that you want to look for in a hand planer, besides quality and durability, is comfort. With a manual hand planer, you'll be providing the power, and you want a planer that will be comfortable enough to work with so that you won't tire too quickly when you are performing a task. If you make comfort a priority when considering a manual hand planer, you'll be glad that you did. Although some people prefer manual hand planers because they believe it gives them more control for detailed jobs, others like the convenience and power of electric hand planers. An electric hand planer can be very efficient for larger jobs as well as smaller, more detailed jobs; all it takes is some practice and you can get the hang of one fairly quickly. If you are considering buying an electric hand planer, you will also want to decide whether you want a corded or cordless variety. The cordless variety of hand wood planer can be much more convenient to use, since there would be no cord in your way. If you buy a cordless hand planer, however, you will also have to pay for batteries, usually the more expensive rechargeable ones, and most likely a battery charger. Some people prefer the corded variety since they will work as long as you need them to, and you don't have to worry about batteries dying in the middle of an important task. If you think that you may need a planer that can do some fairly heavy duty jobs, you'll want to consider buying a larger, stationary wood planer. These type of planers usually sit on their own tables, and they are heavy enough so that you feed larger boards into them. If buying a stationary planer, you'll want one with a good depth control setting and an extension for the table. A larger stationary planer will require periodic cleaning and maintenance also, to keep it running well for a long time.
