Cable Modems: Types Of Connections

r>For many people now purchasing a computer is now more affordable then ever. And with that is the ability to go online. I'm sure you have heard of all the different internet service provider which gives different types of method of getting connected. Using a cable modem is one of the options you can pick to go online. When you use the cable modem it will allow your computer to access high-speed data through a cable TV network. Basically you are now getting internet service from the same company that is currently providing you cable TV services as well. The cable modem will have two connections, one with the cable from the wall connected to it, and the other connection changing the cable signal into a telephone line wire to connect to the computer. On top of that you will also need a modem card internally in your computer for the cable modem to connect.

The speeds that cable modem provide varies since it relies on the cable modem system, cable network architecture, and the load of traffic that may be occurring at the time. The speeds cable modem can download from the internet are 30 Mbsp (megabytes per second). But that would be at its best and at the most favorable situations, a more reasonable but still pretty high on average is 1 - 3 Mbsp. In a heavily packed and dense area, internet speed could end up less than 1 Mbsp. In terms of speed of uploading which is your computer sending data out can have a potential of 10 Mbsp. Most cable internet service provider are starting to limit the amount an account can download and upload a month so by restricting the speed of upload to only 500 Kbsp to 2.5 Mbsp it will allow you to download a lot more.

The services that cable modem gives are more than just internet access. Even though the main service that the cable modem offer is high-speed internet there are plenty more that comes with the cable modem. With the high-speed internet that comes with the cable modem you are now given services that were not often offered by telephone modems due to their lack of speed. First would be access to streaming audio and video. This will allow you to watch video and listen to audio clips without having to wait for half an hour just for a 5 minutes clip. While with cable modem you will be able to watch the clips right away as it will be able to download the clip fast enough for you to watch while it keeps on downloading the rest. But there are more and more services that are being developed that only cable modem can offer to make it more attractive for consumers to pick over other possible internet service provider.

Cable modem services use tends to cost a lot more than just regular dialup phone internet services. With North America being currently using cable modems the most compared to other parts of the world, the price per month can range from $40-$60. But there are now express/lite packages for consumers that do not want to fork over $40 a month can now pay around the same as a dialup connection price but will receive a relatively faster connection. But with these express/lite packages, the amount of downloads and uploads per month will be very limited compared to paying for the full packages that can range from $40-$60 a month. Also some providers will charge you for the rental of the cable modem which is usually covered in the monthly fees.

Cable modems are one of the fastest devices you can use to access the internet. And with the monthly fees possibly ranging up to $60 a month some people may wonder if it's possible to have more than one computer connected to the cable modem? The answer is yes. All you will need is to buy a router to connect the cable modem to. So now instead of having the cable modem connecting to only one computer you will connect it to the router who will then connect to multiple computers. Before having your cable modem provide internet access to all these other computers you must make sure that every one of the have a modem card.

There are lots of different models of cable modems out in the market right now. With many different producers such as Motorola, Linksys, and D-Link to just name three out of a 30 companies and still increasing. Usually the internet service provider will also provide you with a cable modem, but some users just can't get enough speed and believe that a better modem will help them get the download speed that they want. If you have an older model of cable modem you can also easily bring it back to your internet service provider and they will be happy to exchange a new one for you. The cable modem is also commonly known as a broadband modem.
