Cable Wire Guide

Buying cable wires can be somewhat confusing if you're not familiar with the various types of wires on the market. Taking a little time to fully understand the many different types of cable wires on the market, and their purpose, can make the task far less daunting.

Category 5 wires, also known as Cat-5 wires, are wires that are specifically manufactured of 4 pairs of unshielded twisted wires. They were developed to support transmissions consisting of up to 550 MHz. Today, Cat-5 cable wires are usually not suitable for the higher speed networks that are so popular.

A takeoff on the original Cat-5 cable wires, the Cat-5e wires are considered to be an improvement in design because they contain additional shielding through the addition of extra twists to the wire itself. The additional twists to the wires mean that transmissions can occur much faster than the old standard Cat-5 wires. In some cases, speeds can be almost four times faster; gaining from 100MHz to 350MHz.

Cat-6 wires are somewhat different than Cat-5 or Cat-5e wires because a divider is contained inside the inner core in order to further separate the wires. The purpose of this divider is to reduce cross talk between the wires.

If you're having trouble deciding whether the Cat-5, Cat-5e or Cat-6 line would be appropriate for your individual purpose, be sure to consider the fact that Cat-5e and Cat-6 cable wires are best suited for higher-speed Ethernet bases; particularly Ethernet application that hit up to 1000 Mbps. Cat-5e wires are bit more expensive than regular Cat-5 cable wires, but they perform better and faster in addition to the fact that they fully support standard Cat-5 products.

Under most circumstances, right now, there's no need to upgrade to a Cat-6 cable, if you have a Cat-5e that's working well. If you're planning to transfer a large amount of data on a regular basis; however, it may be well worth looking into a Cat-6 upgrade.

Other types of cable wires you may see on the market include PVC and PLENUM cable wires. There is no real difference between the performance speed of each type of cable wire, but there is a tremendous difference in the amount of fire safety protection they each provide.

PVC cable wire contains an outer insulation jacket that surrounds the copper wires. The insulation is manufactured from poly vinyl chloride, giving the name PVC to this particular type of cable wire. This product is designed so that in the event that it catches on fire, it will let off a particularly odorous smoke while it burns. Due to this fact, PVC cable wire is typically recommended to be used in interior wall or floor application in home or commercial environments. An added bonus for residential and commercial consumers is the fact that PVC cable is significantly less expensive than Plenum cable.

The one major advantage of Plenum cable is that the smoke it emits when burning is not nearly as toxic as the smoke emenating from burning PVC cable; which can be quite poisonous.

Plenum cable; which is manufactured from Teflon, is much more expensive, so it's important to know when it's appropriate to use only Plenum cable rather than PVC cable. The one situation in which Plenum cable absolutely must be used is when return air is forced through ceilings, such as drop down ceilings, instead of being ducted through the air conditioning duct work. This usually occurs in commercial settings. In this situation, Plenum cable must be used because the presence of PVC cable would force toxic smoke into the entire building, should a fire occur.
