Caring for Your Keyboard and Computer Mouse

Keeping your computer clean is an integral part of its care. While cleaning the outer area of the computer is quite simple, special attention needs to be paid to the keyboard and computer mouse - the two most commonly handled components of the computer. Because these are the two most commonly handled components, they are also often the dirtiest, and therefore require cleaning more often.

If you are using a computer mouse with a trackball, you will need to open it up. This is easily done by turning the computer mouse over, and removing the small plastic piece that covers the trackball. Remove the ball from the computer, and wipe it with a dry lint-free cloth, such as a cloth baby diaper. Look inside the mouse, and use a cotton swab to clean the 'gunk' off the small plastic wheels inside the mouse. You can dip the swabs in alcohol for easy removal of the gunk, but make sure that the swabs are not soaking wet, and make sure you have unplugged the mouse from the computer. Reassemble the mouse, and wipe the outside with the lint free cloth.

If you are using a laser or optical mouse, do not disassemble the mouse for cleaning. Instead, just wipe it with the lint free cloth often. Be sure to wipe the entire mouse. If the bottom is really dirty, you can try spraying some glass cleaner on the cloth - not directly on the mouse - and wipe the mouse with the damp cloth. Make sure you go back over it with a dry cloth. Buy a new mouse pad often. Mouse pads get dirty very fast, and that dirt transfers to the mouse. It is a good idea to replace the mouse pad every three months of so. Luckily, mouse pads are quite inexpensive.

For care of your keyboard, you should buy a can of compressed air. This can be purchased at your local discount store and at electronic stores as well. The can should come with a long thin plastic tube that fits into the nozzle of the can. This tube allows you to spray the air between the keys of the keyboard to remove dust and other particles. It is very important that you read the directions. Try to hold the can straight when spraying, and do not shake the can of air. Also, spray the air away from the keyboard before directing it towards the keyboard to remove any moisture from the nozzle of the can. Do not spray continuously. Instead, spray in short bursts. Hold the can upright, and tilt your keyboard for best results. Then, take a dry lint free cloth and wipe the keyboard well. Avoid getting any type of moisture on the keyboard.

If you are using a wired keyboard and computer mouse, make sure that you do not bend the prongs inside the connectors - where the device plugs into your computer. Avoid stepping on them. When they are unplugged from your system, make sure you keep them up off the floor. If you have animals in your home, try to position all of your computer wires where they are inaccessible - animals like to chew, and replacing some computer wires can be difficult - not to mention expensive.

Finally, try to avoid eating or drinking near your computer. If you spill a drink on the keyboard, it is ruined. Crumbs of food between the keys are not healthy. While you won't spend much replacing a keyboard or computer mouse in most cases, you should still take good care of it. Proper care will help your keyboard and computer mouse last for many years. As fast as technology advances, your keyboard and computer mouse should become outdated before they stop working!
