Causes Of Divorce: A Short Lesson

Divorce has been a legal matter even from the ancient times, when Romans considered that a marriage should allow both members to leave whenever they feel like it. As times changed, so did the views towards marriage. For instance, in Victorian England, the marriage was for life and divorce was not allowed.

Nowadays, divorce is seen as a bad thing in some parts of the world, while on other parts it is considered something normal, which is regulated by laws. In Western societies, divorce is more frequent, as these societies are more liberal than in other corners of the planet. In societies where family values are more stressed upon, marriage tends to last longer, as divorce is not accepted as normal by other members of the community. Things change, even for the countries that are less developed, as women are encouraged by social change, to aim more at individual accomplishment than caring for a family. Traditional roles fall on a second place and are no longer regarded as essential for the good of the society. While divorce is not something to praise, a marriage that does not work can be even more harmful.

One cannot tell that there is an unique cause for all divorces. The situation depends on the background of both partners, on how their relation worked and so on. Still, there are some causes that are more frequent than others.

Among the causes for divorce that occur in many relationships, you will find the lack of commitment or communication, adultery, different addictions and abuses, abandonment, lack of ability to solve conflicts, differences between personalities, problems related to money, differences in personal goals in life, differences about having or not having children, interferences from other relatives, incompatibility of sexual, intellectual or religious nature, different mental illnesses, criminality and differences in culture or lifestyle. Sometimes, a marriage may end because the spouses are no longer in love with one another.

The most widespread cause of divorce is the lack of communication. Talking about personal feelings or issues is a must have for a marriage to work. When this fails, the marriage fails, as well.

When two people get into a marriage, but they do not discuss about their personal preferences about what they want in life, many conflicts appear. Some people cannot deal even with smaller things, such as snoring, and they file for divorce.

A factor that may contribute to the occurrence of divorce is the provenience of one spouse from a broken home. As divorce is seen as something extreme, it is more likely to happen to these people.

A marriage where two adults of 23-27 years of age are involved last more than a marriage between two teenagers.

Divorce happens more often to people that used to cohabit before marriage than to people that did not do that.

Problems do not just appear, they tend to exist even before the marriage. In order to make things work, you need to ask yourself, honestly, a few questions, and answer to them before committing to marriage. You also have to be a whole person and do not just expect the marriage to do solve your problems for you.
