|
It's no secret. The 911 has long been considered one of the best sports cars of the 20th century. Butzi Porsche designed the original 911 back in 1963 and today we are looking at its reincarnation with the new 966. 40 years later and the basic shape and design remains the same. It's truly a timeless tradition and certainly deserves recognition of that. But just as time demands change so does the 911 and the 993 the replacement for the 911 has seen some dramatic changes while maintaining the core car which is what we all learned to love years ago. The earliest models demanded a great deal of attention and examination to see what was working and what was not. Interestingly the 911 never did see much flubbing. It was very practical compare to much of the competition because it had the 2 seats in the back. Even if they were small they were still useable which was more than much of the competition had. The 911 had many functional features over other cars in the same class. It wouldn't be uncommon to see a 911 traveling through the snow in Austria on a ski trip because they come equipped with both ski mounts and snow tires. You'd never see that on a Lamborghini or Ferrari. The 911 had a very long run remaining in production until 1993 when the 993 platform replaced it. With the advancements in technology the 911 was seeing changes like never before. And Porsche made an executive decision that the 911 number be dropped and a replacement issued. This wouldn't have occurred except that the changes were so intense. The 993 is powered with the air cooled flat six, Porsches legendary engine. This 3.6 L engine is definitely worthy of your attention. If you aren't familiar with it a little bit of research would be worth your time. The 993 saw improvements in the traction control, the introduction of the all wheel drive, six speed transmission, and on board diagnostics as well as multi link rear suspension. There were also advanced electronics and turbo technology. In fact some of the advancements were actually ground breaking. With the 993 you can expect to see a 50% increase to the existing 600 hp. Yup you read right. You are going to get 630 ponies and 602 ft/lbs of torque. Wow! That's impressive! Combine that with the impressive breaking system, steering and handling system, traction system and you can instantly know why the 993 has become so popular. Today there are several great Porsche 993 variations to choose from including the Carrera Coupe, Cabriolet, Targa, or Turbo S. Which variation you choose is entirely dependant on what your needs are but one thing is for sure. No matter which model you choose you can be guarantied quality, performance, and affordability.
