Childproof Roller Blinds for Safe Households
|
Although we struggle to make our homes inviting and comfortable, to create a safe environment for the entire family, our homes present hidden dangers which can jeopardize the physical integrity and even life of young children. One of these threats, as numerous researches indicate, lay in the roller blinds attached to the windows, especially the older ones, manufactured between the years 1991 and 2001. As most investigations indicated, the cause of the accidents were the control cords, which used to be very long and would form dangerous loops at the end. As children were able to easily reach the cords they could also get entangled in them while looking out the window or climbing on furniture objects placed near rollers. Also, many children strangled themselves while playing in cribs or in playpens situated near windows with corded roller blinds. Unfortunately, most of these cases led to serious injuries with longterm or permanent effects and even to death by strangulation. As statistics indicated, children most affected by these hazards were under the age of three, especially toddlers. Worrying about the increasing number of cases reported and so as to not let this phenomenon affect the roller blinds sales, manufacturers around the world introduced a series of upgrade kits on the market. These devices included safety tassels, designed to remove the dangerous loop and cord tensioners and cleats, designed to make the cords unreachable for small children. These kits succeeded in reducing the number of casualties and can be installed onto any type or roller blind as they are universal. If you are a parent and you do live in an old house or a rental which has roller blinds, the best thing to do is to check the manufacturing date on the back of the blinds. If the label on the blinds indicates a date before the year 2001, you should have these blinds childproof using the upgrade kits specified above and move all climbable furniture pieces and cribs away from windows. The best option to take, however, is to have them completely removed and replaced with the new generation of roller blinds available nowadays on the market. These new rollers are equipped with fully integrated safety devices which make them completely child safe. The innovative cord release system automatically detaches the cords of the roller blinds when heavy pressure, such as the weight of a child, is applied. This way the cords are hard to reach by children, while the design and appearance of the rollers is not affected.. Finally, making a home not only comfortable but also safe to live in is in the responsibility of the parent. Understanding that indifference does not lead to protection but to real safety hazards is the best way a home came become safe and childproofing your roller blinds or replacing them with newer models will surely add safety to your interiors.
