Choosing Doctors
|
There are a number of different factors you should keep in mind when shopping around for a new doctor. The method most commonly used by the majority of people is to ask their friends and family members for advice regarding doctors. While this method has certainly proven to be popular in the past, and it is important to seek out references from people you trust, you should also take into consideration numerous other details. One of the most important factors you should consider when shopping around for doctors is qualifications. Obviously, doctors must meet certain educational and professional requirements in order to legally practice medicine, but it's important that you take the time and do some research on your own to determine exactly how well qualified any doctor you are considering might be. One way to do that is to investigate their association with professional organizations such as the American Medical Association. In addition, many professional medical organizations and groups are geared specifically towards certain medical branches, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics. By checking with such organizations and associations you can find out a great deal more regarding the qualifications of doctors you are considering. Beyond a doctor's qualifications, you also need to give heavy consideration to what you find to be most important in a doctor. Depending on your lifestyle and work schedule, this may mean that you need a doctor with certain office hours. Make a point to find out whether the doctor you are considering has an office that is open in the later afternoons or on Fridays; time periods in which doctor offices are most commonly closed and which you may find to be quite inconvenient. What about the average length of the office visit? Will you need to plan to be away for an entire afternoon because the wait to see the doctor is incredibly long-even with an appointment? These are factors that you'll need to take into consideration or you may find yourself sitting in the waiting room for incredibly long periods of time and suffering in silence. How is it handled when the doctor is away? Is a substitute on call and if so; how comfortable do you feel with the substitute that the doctor has chosen to care for his/her patients? What about if you have an emergency and the office is closed? Does the doctor have a reliable emergency answering service so that you can access timely and accurate information? More than likely, as you begin to conduct research on your own and ask the advice of friends and family for recommendations concerning doctors, you will probably find that you run across the same names. You're still not finished at this point; however. It's important to narrow down the process even more in order to find a doctor that you will feel comfortable with. Many experts recommend a technique that is rather similar to auditioning doctors. One way to handle this is to simply pick up the phone and call the office in order to make an appointment. This method alone can provide a lot of insight in regards to how patients are treated by the doctor's office or practice. If you find that you are put on hold frequently, may well know that it's time to keep on looking. About The Author: Jason Petrina is the Editor and Publisher of Article Click.
